Got the Cheetahstand in today. Haven't unboxed yet, but will tonight.

Awaiting my 48" EzPro to ship from Fotodiox, they were backordered and it looks like my ship date is June 6th or so, bummer, but at least it's not months. Still, inexpensive for the size and portability of that thing, I'll gladly wait for it.

Ordered my new monolight, the Flashpoint Rovelight 600, Bowens mount. It'll be here in a few more days or so.

And grabbed some used Yongnuo 622's to play with HSS with the unit.

It'll be another 2 weeks before all of it is in and complete, but I'll be playing with the stand, monolight and triggers while waiting for the softbox to come in. I'll keep this thread updated for anyone interested in how these things balance out before then and after.

Very best,

Good to hear
I'm sure it will work out for ya, but if not you can always send it back for a return.

So I have the Cheetah Boom, which has served me well - But now with my Rovelight, Phottix Luna, and adequate counterweight, it appears to put quite the flex in the boom arm. I'd prefer to have something a bit more robust.

I like the looks of the Avenger 4041, but the reviews suggest the knob to tighten the boom arm isn't the greatest. Do any of you that own this stand have the same complaint? The footprint looks very sturdy.

I would really like to find something with telescopic legs (like 3 leveling legs) to get that bigger foot print. I'm wondering if just buying a better boom, like the 600 and using it on my cheetah stand would be a better solution.

This stand will be used for on location work. Seniors, weddings etc.

Edit - When a boom is listed as having a "maximum load" of 8# like the Mathews Mini Boom - is that total? Light and counterweight?

The Avenger A4039CS is a pretty solid boom. I have not put lots of miles on mine, but it has held some pretty heavy gear. (Kacey Beauty dish/Elinchrom Lights)

Hmm, I'm digging this Avanger boom (external link) myself.

Heya,

Update.

The Cheetahstand is unboxed and man, I'm really impressed with it, it's much, much bigger than my other stands that I've been using with little 24" softboxes. Very sturdy, very user-friendly, fast to setup and change up. Very stable with the counter weight.

The Fotodiox 48" EZpro is still on delay, so still awaiting that one. I have a Westscott 43" shoot through umbrella in the mean time, and my little 24" softbox that I typically use. It'll hold me over until the big octa arrives.

So I got my Rovelight 600B, and more delays, because it's not working at all. I received a beautiful looking completely dead in the water unit. Called support at Adorama and working out the RMA to get a replacement. Which of course, will be delayed, because its the Bowens mount and stock is low. Pretty miffed with this one. It's the kind of light I want, super portable and no wires at all, with HSS. But completely dead and inoperable out of the box? Annoying. Granted, it will be replaced and I know these things happens, I've had it before with countless things that were costly and one would expect proper operation, but still, irritating to not just get a dead unit but also have to wait.

Sigh.

So looks like so far, only the Cheetahstand has been something that came fast, was perfect out of the box and ready to go. So I'm currently going to be running around with it and my umbrella & speedlite for the time being, until my Rovelight 600B issue is resolved and the 48" octa finally arrives.

Very best,

Don't want to change the drift of the thread, but what kind of "SHIP DATE" have you received on the 48' Ez-Pro Octa? I ordered one on Monday, and yesterday I received an out of stock notice....
But they did promptly charge my CC.

Regards,

Heya,

I got an email saying they're out of stock and would ship 6/2/2015, but haven't gotten an update.

My original order was placed May 25th.

Me either, but can't seem to find the Bowen's mount any where in stock, and other places other than direct it costs nearly double the price.

I'll wait a bit longer and then call to cancel probably and see what comes of it.

The insert ring is a 6" (15.2cm) diameter.

Heya,

Playing around with the cheetahstand and a speedlite and a 43" umbrella, while I wait for my other stuff to eventually come in and actually work (the strobe and 48" octa).

Above is the cheestastand with 2 coke cans in the counter weight bag, holding the boom up high with a yongnuo 560III with generic battery pack attached, 1/4th CTO Gel on the flash, with 43" westscott umbrella. Decent breeze going and it felt rock solid. I know I'll need more counter weight when I move to my strobe and octa. I have bungees & stakes for that too to ensure stability when that time comes.

Camera is a 5D with an EF 85 F1.8, with a 3 stop ND filter on (Marumi 3 stop) and rubber lens hood. Yongnuo RF603C transceiver, and I'm using a remote trigger to trip the camera so I can "selfie" test.

It's about 4pm, very bright out (Florida) with sun behind where I'll be sitting, so back lit very strongly.

Here's the image with no filters, no flash, and shutter to normal exposure of what the subject would be (me). Sky is blown out of course at wide aperture (F2.8 here).

Here's the image with the 3 stop ND filter onboard, and I opened the aperture to F2 to get a little more light back. I now have the sky thanks to the ND filter preserved better and ambient light is dropped below sunny 16 standards. You can see the backlighting from the sun. It's my free rim light. The rest is full flash exposure from the speedlite through the umbrella suspended above me to camera right, acting as fill. I think it's obvious to see the difference between the bleaching sun on my shirt and the fill light from the flash doing the rest of the work.

I think I was able to match the flash & gel to ambient light enough for it to not look like obvious "flash" but rather just filled in. Could use critique on that from anyone!

Can't wait to get the strobe back in working condition. The flash was barely able to muscle through at 1/1 power, with the gel & umbrella at decently close distance.

Very best,
