get the 17-55 cos theres no overlap with your current lens and those 2 lengths are perfect partners
if you get the 24 you will wish you had a wider end

When you have a 40D, there's nothing better than 17-55 :)

Here's my contribution for the 24-105:

well actually I have the same problem, I have the 10-22, 17-55 60 macro and 70-200
So no coverage from 56 to 59 and from 61 to 69mm :p

overlap is good to fill in the gaps later but first i think its best to get the major focal lengths and extremes, so as to be less restricted

I ended up selling my 70-200 F4 because I rarely used it. Reaching 105 was almost always enough for me and swapping to gain 200 was rarely worth it.

Now I'm considering swapping the 24-105 for the 24-70 once I can afford the 70-200 2.8 IS. I'm thinking with my kids growing up the 70-200 2.8 IS will be a killer sports lens and portrait lens... and the 24-70 would be the ultimate companion.

All that being said, I think if I did sell off my 24-105 I'd really miss it. It's a fantastic "leave on the body" lens.
