anyone use extension tubes with your 24-105L?

I see the MFD is about 17" - much much nicer than my 85's 2.8 ft ;-)a

Yes, I've used mine on the 24-105 and the combo works very well as a "cheap" macro setup. I've used just the lens alone to do some nice semi-macro work so it's a great lens on it's own.
