Needed a reliable fast performing NAS for work for a new project we are working on with a 2yr duration and expected 10-15 user accessing files simultaneously. I made some recommendations to our lead IT manager and surprisingly he agreed so we purchased:

http://www.amazon.com …1-1&keywords=qnap+tvs-471 (external link)

and four of these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …am_851_evo_250gb_2_5.html (external link)

Qnap TVS-471 w/ four Samsung 850 Evo 250GB drives.

Set the machine up for Raid 6 so we have 447GB of storage (we expect to only use under 100gb) but the fact is we now have dual disk failure SSD performance and we also have a standard 500GB external drive plugged into the USB 3.0 slot that we are using to backup the Qnap. We also have the corporate servers backing up the drive remotely. I think as far as redundancy we have things covered.

Now... since we will be in an office productivity with multiple users we picked the SSD and boy let me tell you.... copying the server files over which was 20gb of data with all sorts of spreadsheets, documents, large navisworks model files and such the transfer across a gigabit network was smooth along at 45MB/sec which I though was impressive. We actually have all 4 lan ports connected and transfering a large 1.5GB file over flew at over 200MB/sec

Without a doubt this machine is flat out fast and awesome. $1700 is the money we spent but it was through our company and we are doing this in lieu of an actual server which we were quoted $5k w/ a 5yr service plan. So in the end the management feels good about the savings and I feel great about being able to work directly from the NAS with multiple users w/o hiccup.

Just wanted to share.

With that many users reading and writing to SSDs, it may not be the performance your expecting.

They have a finite amount of read/writes + moving large quantities of data in short periods of time will slow them down.

once we got all the project files moved over the expected use will be small amounts. If they start failing then we'll swap to HDD but for now they will stick in place. It'll get 5 days a week use but again for the most part it'll maybe have 20-40 files written/modified daily to it for the next two years. Will be used alot more as a read device though.

My concern would be the SSD and Endurance and wear leveling. If a user is doing lots of writes, that SSD is going to fail. Be aware of the fact that extreme workloads could wear out the FLASH in the SSD. The 850 Pro is made for a heavier work load.

Please quantify 'lots of writes'.

For his stated use, I don't see these drives failing.

Here is a link to the spec for the Samsung SSD's and the warranty. The term TBW (TOTAL BYTES WRITTEN) is flash Endurance. The difference between the 850 Pro Series and the 850 EVO series is double the warranty, and double the TBW.

I would be using the Magician software to monitor the TBW in the original poster's application for sure.

See section B:

SSD endurance test (external link). Don't worry about it.

Don't forget to do a restore test... backups are great, but they need to be tested. Also remember a mirror is not a backup - read about windows backup software here (external link).

Nice find on the SSD Endurance article. I will gladly spend a few extra $$ for the Samsung Pro just for the peace of mind.

It was a huge test lasting months or years, no consumer and even few businesses will ever stress them that much. You'd have to be public cloud to get anywhere close. I have the 840 pro, it's good.

I also have an 840 Pro. I have built multiple machines using the Pro series, and have had absolutely no problems.....and want to keep it that way.
