Actually, with the 1.8 aperture, you might be able to use DIY flood lights.....take note Miguel shot the woman with an nd filter to shoot at 1.8 so you just might be able to do the same thing but skipping out the strobes....

just curious with miguel's shot with the old man. if the background is black and you cannot even see the bokeh, why not just stop down the aperture instead of an ND filter. I would use wide open with ND filter if i need to show off shallow DOF and a nice creamy bokeh bright background but it's black anyway. i'm not saying it's wrong, just curious. just trying to learn.

I'm even tempted by the Batis 85mm... and I'm very happy with my Rokinon, albeit too heavy and large for my tastes on the a7S.

A bit of lazy to check the photo again of the old man but the DoF with the ears going blurred might be the look that they want. So even if the background is black, the very shallow DoF will still render most of the head blurred.....

just venturing a guess though.

I'm sure Miguel said in the video it was to create a sort of 3d pop to the image. I would have to watch again to confirm tthough

In E-Mount, the Samyang 85mm weights 570g.
The Batis 475g. There's a difference here but the weight itself is not the reason to switch, imho.

I just canceled my pre-order for Batis 85, and ordered 90 macro, instead.

I know 1 1/3 stop is huge, but from every account, 90 macro is one of the sharpest lenses out there. Period. DXO mark even has it beating Zeiss MP 100.

I am not a macro shooter. Portraits is what I am getting this for. But, portraits at large aperture are tricky, so I decided to go with a slower, but perhaps more versatile, 90 2.8. Plus, OSS is big for me at this focal length.

That’s my story, and I am sticking to it.

Edit: Batis 85 is also a stabilized lens. So, clearly, not a deciding factor.

You'll definitely get the Sony before the Zeiss!

I lust after the Batis 85 like crazy (portrait shooter, primarily). But until Zeiss works out their supply/demand issues, I guess I'll be doing headshot sessions with the 90 macro, because that's what I was able to get my hands on. And holy crap is it ever sharp. But still, as soon as the Batis is reliably in stock long enough for me to put together the moolah for it, it will be mine. (85Lii on the MB4 does the trick in the meantime when I want some bokeh magic)

Hopefully within a month the shops will be full of them. It's a hard wait

Ask in a couple months. This thing will be on back-order for a while. I pre-ordered two days after the pre-orders started in April. Still no lens for me.
