The female has a brown back, the male a glossy green/blue color.

Really nice photos. We have these here at our local wetlands and they are really cool little birds. I have a few photos, but working on more! I watched a pair building a nest of sorts a month or so ago.

Nice set, Trevor! I saw my first one a couple of Thanksgivings ago at Don Edwards NWR in the SF Bay area. Pretty skittish birds - great job getting close enough to get such high quality shots!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

It pays to Lay on the ground prone. No hide, no camo, no nothing. Sure that stuff helps, but it works wonders with relaxing them, just to be on the ground.

Nice job Trevor.

You are absolutely correct with laying down.
We have them here and they get pretty close of you just lay still.

One of my favorites, Trevor, always around our winter area. Always seem to produce a sense of satisfaction when you get great shots like these. Well done, sir.
