Currently I'm using a 6D and a 1D3, the 6D for portrait work, and filming with a VAF-6D anti alias filter.

The 1D3 I mainly use for good light sports.

I like a lot of features the A7S offers, Gary Fong of course impressed many people with his talk a couple months ago:

I like the fact that it has powerful AF, shoots 4K and is much lighter. The a6000 looks like potentially a good pair for those sporting events I need high speed; but I haven't seen many pro photographer's examples from the a6000 yet.

I'll probably try renting a a6000 initially, to see how it works, maybe with an adaptor for my EF lenses. Particularly interested in seeing how it handles the 70-200 f2.8 IS.

I love Canon, and Canon support and service; but the equipment is heavy, and you really take a chance at buying any of their newer DSLR cameras now. I want to be able to use the camera primarily for filming; but also have the ability to shoot clean stills as well.

May be asking for too much!

I know member here named everdaygetaway went from a 6D to an A7R to A7S, so hopefully he chimes in with real world experience.

Hey, yes I did make that change and ultimately I'm very happy with the a7S.

I can't speak for video because I rarely take any videos, in fact I have yet to take a video with the a7S which I'm sure sounds sacrilegious to some

I was shooting entirely with MF lenses when I had my 6D, I used AF lenses for it, but by the time I made the switch I hadn't owned any in nearly a year. I just got my first AF lens for the a7S (FE 28mm) and the AF seems very competent.

The main reason for my switch was to get a smaller system with the same or better high ISO handling of my 6D, the a7R didn't cut it for me, but the a7S is truly remarkable. I find that I like the colors from it just as much as the Canon, I couldn't say that about the a7R, but many others do so take it for what you will.

I haven't missed my 6D once since getting the a7S, it takes beautiful images in any lighting and it's ergonomics work perfectly for me.

Everyone is different though, I would try renting one first if you can, it's very different from a 6D.

Thank you, I was really wondering how the built in Anti Alias filter affected still images. On your website, where would I see A7S images? I honestly can't imagine getting a 4k capable camera... and not wanting to give it a try :)

I do plan on renting one first, maybe with an EF adapter to see how it fairs with my EF lenses for starters. The video I linked above was really over the top at letting me see what Canon lacks, and Sony is giving for so much less.

Thanks for the input!

Almost every image up to the one below (it being the first from the a7S on my flickr page) on my flickr page are from the a7S, the EXIF should still be intact for all the images on my flickr.

FYI, it can only do 4k via an external recorder, it won't do it in camera. From what I understand it still takes excellent (better than Canon) 1080p video as well though. Funny enough, I got into photography via video... I was a big film guy in high school and helped friends with various college films, I actually bought my first DSLR (not counting my 20D which was a gift) with the intention of making films with it and doing photos as an added bonus... I only made one film with that camera (T2i) and found a new passion with photography  I do intend on getting back into video though, unfortunately I lack the spontaneous nature for video creativity, I prefer to plan out a story and get actors, which is harder to do now that my acting friends have moved on to other things or other places -? In the end though, I do realize it's ultimately just me being lazy, I really should think of a quick film idea

As for the camera, I think renting with the EF adapter is a solid idea. Bare in mind too that if you do decide to buy one you don't have to fork over $400 for the metabones adapter (unless you really feel compelled to for some reason), there are numerous adapters for far less which work just as well, though all of them (including the metabones) will need to be flocked. Flocking is really easy to do though and also really cheap, so don't fear that part ;)

I have both as well, though only the A7s recently. The original plan was to keep both for my low-light/event usage, and just retain the 24-70L and 17-40L for use with the 6D and wide-angle needs (mostly for AF for indoor event / family stuff) and use native glass and my MF collection on the A7s. I've been pretty impressed with the AF speed on the A7s and 55 FE 1.8. It's not dSLR speed, the 6D AF's faster, but from what I've seen (and it is lens dependent), the A7s is maybe 75% of the AF speed of the 6D. It's pretty good for mirrorless, IMO. With a Canon adapter, AF on EF lenses will be dog slow, not much you can about that.

The real kicker is ISO performance. I held out for a long time because I didn't think 12mp would cut it. And honestly, I'll be picking up either an a7II or a7rII (when released) for most work as 12mp really does have some limitations. However, the ISO performance is so good on the a7s the 12mp is irrelevant, as it'd be almost impossible to get a quality shot with any other camera in some instances. I took the a7s outside last night at ~9PM (here in Chicago that's almost pitch black right now), and was shooting at ISO 25,600 and above, and the cleaned up raw images (mostly default NR via CO) are fantastic. The same images on a 6D would've been blocky-pixel soup.

If you're going to keep your 1D3 and don't mind investing in some native FE glass (assuming you need decent AF performance), then I definitely think replacing the 6D wtih the a7s is a valid choice.

I really appreciate all the input, good to hear about the AF... it really does suck for sports on the 6D. It handles the light so much better than my 1D3 though. I will probably rent an a7S to try, and decide after that!

Anyone tried the a6000? 11fps sounds impressive for a sports shooter; but I'd be interested to know how the images look.

The a7s is brilliant at low-light, but IMO, it's not an 'only camera' setup for most photographers (especially for sports!). Obviously the a6000 is supposed to be very fast to AF, but I've never played with Sony's APS-C offerings myself.

According to SAR, there's supposed to be another a6xxx coming out shortly, so you may want to keep an eye on that!

Keep in mind that a7s shoots 4k externally instead of internally like the GH4.
And for night time portraits, the camera basically sees more light than your eyes do. So you can do higher shutter speeds in low light.

I've played with the a6000...FAST. Not just in FPS, but the AF feels like a 7D Mark 1. If I unload my pair of 1D's, that will be my next camera. They're going for $400 slightly used.

Tried an A7 today, just out of interest whilst killing time in town ( GAS from reading these forums, made a specific trip if I'm honest... ), first thoughts, focus peaking is superb, what a great facility, the build quality is very high, I loved the real time exposure compensation dial, real time DOF as well, some stuff I could really see myself using, a lot, but by heck that shutter is loud!!! A lot to think about, an AWFUL lot....

Another 6D owner, who isn't bothered by the 6D that much, but loves his canon glass.....

you don't have any samples of sports shots made with the a6000 do you?

Your wallet will hate me, but check out this vimeo user: https://vimeo.com/user35066325 (external link) - he actually has a lot of handheld footage (at ISO 1600, which still looks great on the A7s) and unless he took it down, he has some comparison footage to the A7ii.
