RB-90 is equal to the Eli DO and the RB-120 produces a softer light. The eli is pebbled and the RB is smooth and has more contrast output with the defusers on you will not really see any differences between the too.

The Black On Black one with no zipper was the first prototype and it has black inside velcro piping. The one Edward sells has gray piping and inside velcro piping. You will want to make sure you velcro the back vents closed to not see the black velcro. If you don't close the back vents properly you will see the black velcron 4 lines in the catch lights and will have wrinkles in the RB. The picture above shows the vents fully closes properly and on both the prototype and the one for sale. You can see the black in the prototype and almost seamless in the new version.

If you don't want the black zipper showing up in the catch light on closeup images you will want it at the top of the box or place the diffusers on.

thanks for the info. I am definitely ordering the RB-120 now. BTW.... what is the function for the zipper?

The function is so you can go indirect with it using a second stand or attaching a boom arm. Plus it allows you to adjust the Dim sum plate (optional beauty Dish) or gels in with out having to crawl thew the front of the RB.

sure. I hope it's well designed, affordable and can compete with the bigger brand names.

the ricebowl can mount different rings sizes
their are 4 taped holes on the back
you will take the 7mm screws out of the front and mount them in the back of the speed ring to mount different size insert rings. You might have to get some washers to fit smaller then a 6" insert ring.

Scott, thanks for all the great info. I have a few questions, if you can help:

I'm sorry if this is a redundant question, but does the RB come with a specialized speed ring? or does it come only with an insert? Is there anything additional I'd need to buy?

I'm planning on using the RB not only with my Cheetah CL-360 lights, but possibly with an Indra500. Would the Dim Sum plate be entirely unnecessary with either of these lights?

Finally, with regard to the zipper in the RB, is that zipper always visible inside? There is no way to hide them other than with the outer diffusion panel?

The speed ring is what you mount the rice bowl too. You can buy different insert rings for it. If your using the 360 or the Indra 500 you want the bowens insert ring. You will want to buy the pro s bracket for the 360 to mount. The Dim sum plate is to convert it to a beauty dish or if your using a speed light to spread the light inside the RB. The zipper is visible unless you use the outer diffusion. If you place it at the top its less visible in most images or you could try taping over it, but not sure how the tape would react to the inter lining. ( might peal the interlining off). It really don't effect the light, just close up reflections.

Thanks, Scott!

Just so I really understand: When I order the Rice Bowl, does it come with both the speed ring for the RB and a Bowens insert ring??

If so, that's a very good deal!

I saw the setup video of the ricebowl
I have the 39" elinchrom deep octa to compare

The reflective silver in the deep octa looks definitely more reflective than the one shown in the ricebowl videos, meaning you could possibility get more power if you like shooting in sun with high speed sync

I find the way the rods are sewn an ingenious idea, props, the way the speed ring and setup is design the sewn in rods make it a necessity I order to make it fast to setup

I'm not sure what the rods are made of though, are they steel? Fibreglass is prone to breaking definitively, if they are steel the softbox will be less prone to breaking due to a bad case of wind when on location

I looked at other 16 rod soft boxes and none compare to the setup of the Ricebowl since they have a stupid $200 separate speedring mount; there's a Selens one on eBay that uses a normal speedring though but it's probably less quality than the ricebowl

I'm Canadian so the ricebowl is not accessible to me, just my thoughts after looking around for a while and found a friend selling this deep octa
