This is the kind of info I need to be reading. Thanks for confirming. The reason I was drawn to the batis 25 was that it could double as a landscape lens if I leave the 16-35 at home. I would get rid of the fe28 if I had the batis

The batis 25 is definitely a better general purpose lens than the Loxia. The FOV and f2 aperture can make for some nice environmental portrait photography that you can't pull off with the Loxia.

If I didn't have the RX1, and/or had another UWA option, I'd stick with the Batis.

Batis 25 portraiture:

Bonus:

When used with eye AF, it's a good selfie lens lol:

I am sure this is somewhere in the 1000 pages of this thread, but I am hoping someone can point me to a thread specific to my question.

I am looking to increase my critical focus using 50mm and 85mm primes on portraiture. Using focus and recompose on my 6D doesn't give me the confidence that I will nail it 100% of the time, and the outer point are basically useless for me. Would a A7II help increase my hit rate, considering the same technique and native mount lenses? What is the best/most informative thread on the topic? Other factors of the camera are not my concern, simply hitting focus in this situation.

Focus recompose at apertures in the range of f/1.4-f/1.4 is a sure fire recipe for frustration on any camera. The a7ii will allow you to focus with the outer points though and your hit rate will increase

Sorry, that's what I meant. I would like to be able to just use the outer points on the A7II and be confident at wide apertures.

Nah. 25 is going to go. It hasn't gotten much use since I got the RX1RII and I want something wider since I've got 24mm covered with my zoom.

Ahh sorry, then to answer your question yes. As the focus on the sonys is on sensor theres no issues with front back focus like you get on dslr. I use the a7rii outer points all the time, I assume the A7ii would be similar

Yes. The upside to mirrorless bodies is that the AF is not subject to microfocus issues and is significantly more accurate across the entire frame. Beyond that, face detect, which works with the a7II, does a very good job at getting accurate focus on your subject's eyes. I've been using the 50L on my a7rII lately and the face detect system has done wonders for this lens, which was an autofocus nightmare with my old 5DIII.

The a7rII and a6300 have af-c eye focus with native lenses which will nail focus on the eyes basically 100% of the time outside of user error. Very nice feature that has changed the way I shoot since I really don't mess with AF points when using native lenses.

YAY its a long lens announcement. hmmmm not quite the convincing one I was hoping for. Not sure about the 4.5-5.6 and price. Need to really feel the speed / IQ value. Sorta makes the FE70200f4 a weird mix for me now.

That's what I have been reading, but I have never used a Sony in real world use and wanted to confirm. That pretty much nails what I am looking for. An A7rII would be awesome, but I can't justify the cost yet. But it sounds like the regular A7II should be a huge improvement from my 6D outer focus points.

Might just be time to switch. Thanks again for the info.

yes it will be, but be warned, a downgrade in high ISO. The A7ii doesnt do eye focus tracking, but still good enough. Accuracy will be a notch above the 6D with any lens, including adapted canon lenses.

MFA is a thing of the past with Sony Mirrorless. My keeper rate went up significantly coming from a 5D3. downside, too many to edit. lol

I have no need to shoot above 3200, so no concern of mine. As I mentioned, my only concern was the AF. Battery life, lens section, etc are no concern of mine. The AF was the reason I am considering (and the IBIS for primes).

Figures. If I had known this was coming I probably wouldn't have bought a Zeiss 55mm... Oh well, I'm sure the Zeiss will still be worth keeping :)

Hah I'm sure the 55 1.8 is a better lens.
