Sony A7x lounge

I'm guessing the RAW files produced by Sony camera apps are still lossy compression RAW files?

Sony rep was at my local camera store today. Spent some time with the 24-70GM. Massive lens, but feels just as big as the adapted Canon version. AF is fast in the piss-poor light of the camera store, but not any faster than the other FE lenses I've tried. I didn't walk out feeling that I need to buy the lens though....partly because the 24-70II does a respectable job when adapted to the a7rII....but mostly because it's hard for me to get excited about zooms. Zooms are more practical lenses for me, and the 24-70GM is like a really expensive mini-van lol. I'll end up with one eventually if I keep shooting events, but it will definitely be more out of necessity.

Also played with the 85GM. Also big, but not as big as I expected...probably about the size of the FE35 1.4. Lighting sucked in the store so can't comment on image quality, but the AF is not as loud as people made it out to be.

One last thought....the a7 cameras feel really awkward without the leather half cases I use...especially when you start mounting these DSLR sized lenses on. Being able to grip the camera with all of my fingers changes the way it feels in hand completely.

They will be. If your camera is set to uncompressed it will record an uncompressed RAW I believe. And if its set to compressed it will be lossy compressed. Same resulting image though as far as my eyes can tell

Well, if the end result is a 4x MB file, then it surely is a lossy compression RAW file.

From sunrise yesterday morning...I try to get out before work starts when I am on the coast...was glad I got up for the 4:45 wake up call after only 3 hours sleep...

I'm using the Kaza. I previously had the Gariz, but I can't stand the position of the tripod mount on that case.

I am going to have to get the grip for when I am doing portrait or handheld shooting work...I already have mild arthritis in both hands at too young an age...my hand starts to ache when shooting with the Sony...the grip will make that better.

So I just got off the phone with Sigma about my poor performance with MC-11.

What I learned from the Sigma rep is that firmware in the MC-11 came from Sony, MC-11 is a joint venture between Sigma and Sony, that surprised me... So Sigma didn't crack Native lens code, they got it from Sony, not sure if thats true, just something that Sigma rept told me...

Anyway, sigma asked me to reset my camera and try the adapter again, if still the performance is bad, try to get another. They don't have any native sony lenses or metabones to compare to, but performance shouldn't be bad.... so I guess I will check.

Yeah shooting with my pinking hanging off the body for a long period of time would put a lot of strain on my hands/writs. I have a similar problem when shooting on a small DSLR like a rebel.

These half cases add just enough height to the camera to give my pinky something to grip on and make for more comfortable shooting.

My understanding is that its not so much that it was a joint venture, but that Sigma was given access to the firmware specs by Sony. The FE mount is basically open source.

I end up with two fingers wrapped around under the bottom of the camera and it kills my knuckles...which are where I have issues...

Ha, I feel the same about the A7Rii without the vertical grip. I took it off a couple days ago to lower the weight, to mount on a little clamp-on tripod sort of thing, and then snapped a few shots camera in hand afterwards. Felt like a tiny little toy without the grip I've become accustomed to.

Also have the same feelings on the 24-70. I'm very torn on that one. The 24-70Lii is far and away my most frequently used lens when I'm shooting live theatre. But that's maybe 1/4th of my paid gigs - the rest are headshot/portrait sessions where I rarely ever use it. I'm also leery of making the switch out of fear that Canon might lure me back with a pro-level EF-mount mirrorless at some point. first world problems
