Amazingly I did a check through my Lightroom database and made an amazing discovery. My usage of each camera is very nearly equal! I only had about 65 more shots from the a7R II. Funny how we can perceive things wrongly. My sense was that I was neglecting the 5DS R, but that's not even close to reality.

Oh, then I'd say: re-evaluate the situation in 6 or 12 months from now. ;-)a

I wanted to ask everyone's opinion on something. I made the decision to switch back to DSLR. It was not an easy decision, as I absolutely loved having the great image quality, DR, and focus accuracy. However, I just could not get used to the smaller body, or the EVF. (Nothing against the evf, it was great, but just not for me)

Now to get to my question.. I have been trying to sell my A7RII for over a week, and haven't even got an inquiry. Is the re-sale that bad for Sony bodies? Mine is about 4 months old, looks brand new, with <1000 clicks. I started at 3K, but then dropped my price another 300. Just not sure what is going on. What is a decent price for something like this?

Thanks

Tim

I'll give some thoughts as a serial GAS addict who's constantly changing gear.

- You definately pay the early adopter tax. No doubt about it. You'll buy a full, new MSRP you'll take a hit of at least 10-20% regardless of condition. I've seen people buy new RX1RII and can't sell them without losing $400-500 off the top.

- Definately have to deal with grey market sellers. Especially considering for a comparable price you can either buy a used body that by the letter of the T&C the warranty isn't transferrable in the majority of cases (you can find a work around sometimes by including the receipt but officially the warranty isn't transferrable) or you can get a new body without a warranty with 0 clicks. For the same amount and without warranty in either case, I know I'd prefer the 0 click body.

- You're talking about a project that may be mid-life in terms of product cycle and being the new kid on the block. I doubt Photokina passes without Sony doing something in terms of a Mark III body or an a9. Those that would want to buy the body most likely bought the body by now. Those who are saving up for it are probably waiting for a price drop for a new body. The market for a buyer for a used body is probably over saturated now.

- You'll probably be looking at the $2,400-2,500 range. I know a lot of people who sold their a7rII's for $2,500.

Resale value sucks on everything right now; lenses included. That's why I feel it necessary to change my mind about selling my 5DS R: it's worth far more to me than it will be on the resale market.

The bummer is my decision means I'll be returning the Loxia 21mm when it arrives tomorrow. I have a great kit already and I simply can't afford to take a loss on selling gear in order to buy new gear. The exception is my 24-70L II, which I don't need and will use that sale to the fund various accessories I do need.

This realization drives home to me just how painful this GAS-inducing thread is going to be going forward. :p

I agree. The old adage that bodies depreciate in value and lenses hold their value doesn't seem to be exact science now. You'll see used lenses depreciating a lot as well. The advantage is that lenses are transferrable in terms of usage from body to body. If you're buying anything new, just go into with knowing ahead of time to expect a 20% hit right off the bat, just like a new car.

it's the same because the 5Dsr had many bracketed shots to make up for the DR

Haha. :D Actually I bracket the a7R II just about as much. But, of course now that I have the smooth reflections app, my a7R II clicks are going to go way way up!

I'm looking for some feedback / advice on the 2 edits of this panoramic milky way shot. Not sure I'm 100% happy with it, I just can't make up my mind and will continue having a play with it.

2 rows of 7 shots. I did take a 3rd row, but it didn't stitch together well at all and knocking the top row off worked a treat.

This is from Bombo Quarry in Kiama, Wollongong, Australia. A7mkii with Samyang 24mm F1.4 iso 3200 13 seconds per shot.

^Looks great! I prefer the color and contrast in the first one. I'm an absolute noob at astro photography though.

Got my FE 50mm f/1.8 in today

IMAGE: http://i68.tinypic.com/2dc8mye.jpg

IMAGE: http://i66.tinypic.com/2gxi62s.jpg

Both samples at 1.8. Jpegs, in camera corrections turned off. (Accidently had the camera in APS-C, barely realized right now)

As far as AF I'm happy, it's quick and accurate outdoors.
It slows down indoors in dim light but it still gets focus and no hunting.
If it's this good on my A7 I can only image how better it will be on the Gen II bodies.

Performance is identical to the Canon 50mm 1.8 STM. It has the same optical design so not surprising.
Build quality is identical also, just the FE is louder in terms of noise, but not as loud as the Canon 50mm 1.8 II.

Now if they could only copy the Canon 35mm 2.0 and 85mm 1.8 I would be thrilled!

Which is one reason I will continue to do it with one exposure. I am starting to trust the metering on the camera, learning that the screen is way off and bracketing less...old habits are hard to kill.

Overall, I like the setting, the exposures, the editing, there is just something in the perspective correction seems a little off, I was watching a tutorial on stitching these big multi row MW panos the other day, and one of the options fixed the issue...its kinda present in yours...I will have to see if I can find that tutorial.

The presenter uses PTGui, I think for multirow it works really well...I have only needed to use it a few times, very powerful software...

Got a dilemma of sorts. Today the Loxia 21 got delivered. I was going to simply return it without even opening the box (due to my change of heart about selling my 5DS R), but after comparing it to my EF 16-35 f/4L IS I am wowed. Actually in the middle 2/3 of the frame the Loxia shows no superiority over the 16-35mm. But in that last area towards the borders the Loxia just absolutely crushes the 16-35mm. So, I am torn and really leaning towards keeping it. I just sold my 24-70L II today, so it can pay for the Loxia.

Also, my Loxia appears to be slightly decentered, but it looks maybe OK. I'm thinking I'll never notice it, especially at landscape apertures.
