Lol, depends on who you ask really

The R50 is the first gen non-supercharged basic hatchback, then the R53 is the "S" model for the 1st Gen, it's supercharged and has a few other differences, then the second gen hardtops were titled R56 for both "S" (which was now turboed instead of supercharged) and the current hardtop is now designated F56 and has a bigger 2.0L Turbo motor. The new one is objectively faster than the others, but most enthusiasts will tell you they're steadily losing their fun appeal... I'm not sure how true that is with the F56, but I will say that I drove an R56 prior to my R53 and I wasn't impressed with it, it sort of turned me off from Mini's for a few years to be honest... then I was convinced to try out an R53 by a BMW forum member and as soon as I finished my test drive I started looking for one, then I sold my 330i and haven't regretted it since :)

I received a nice photo assignment for my time in KC over the next two weeks, and I'm thinking about adding a new lens to my kit to help me complete my project.

The project will include a lot of nightlife shots. I have the excellent 35L II, which should be great, but I'm thinking about something really wide and really fast. As much as I love the Loxia 21, I am actually thinking about the Sigma 20mm Art. A full two stops faster than the Loxia and has AF.

Sound reasonable?

Another possibility is Batis 18mm, which could be really cool as well. But, it's still 2 stops slower.

OTOH the Sigma isn't filter friendly, but I'm not too worried about it as I do have the filter friendly 16-35 f/4L IS, but it still bugs me somewhat.

I didnt realise the sigma didnt take filters (should have really realised that). If weight/size isnt an issue I would go with the Sigma. I really want a Batis 18 but like you say the sigma is much faster.

EDIT - Price is friendlier too

The Sigma looks like a really interesting lens and you can do some creative things at f1.4 and 20mm. I'm a wide aperture guy so believe me I was tempted...the only reason I didn't go that route was size.

The Sigma is a lot of fun, you can get really creative with that wide angle and that aperture. It is also incredibly sharp stopped down. It is a beast, not small by any stretch, and is not filter friendly. It is on the short list to end up in my bag.

I would love the Batis 18 too! But, yes, price of the Sigma is yet another strong appeal.

f/1.4 is always awfully appealing, and I'm stunned by how well Sigma pulled it off on a 20mm lens.

Travis, your photos with it really captured my attention; it hadn't been on my radar till you started posting.

One final note - just in case anyone missed it - here is a nice comparative review between the Loxia 21 and Sigma 20 by Ming Thein: https://blog.mingthein.com …20-art-vs-zeiss-21-loxia/ (external link)

It is impressive that Ming regards both as the best 20-ish mm lenses available.

David, the AF plus wide aperture of the Sigma and the generous 20 mm make it very attractive. Negatives as you mentioned are weight and I wasn't aware it didn't accept filters. That's a shame. You can't go wrong with the Loxia 21, Batis 18 or the Sigma 20. Tough choice. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.

Congrats on the assignment!

It still amazes me how many people underestimate or completely have no idea what a Mini really can do. You can always tell a true driving enthusiast from a general "car guy" based on how they perceive cars like Mini Coopers and Mazda Miatas... if they scoff at them then they clearly aren't real enthusiasts

Which generation is your Mini?

Great shot by the way ;)

I zoomed in to 35mm for this image of the sunrise at Haleakala. Well worth the trip to the peak.

those are quite pretty but i myself am a truck guy,i have toys and i haul stuff so a truck is a must. to me the first gen dodges with the cummins were damn sexy:-)
people underate the cummins 5.9l its a inline 6 cylinder engine thats capable of well over 1000hp on fuel alone, theres a million clips of the 8000lb truck smoking the doors off c5 corvettes and vipers. cummins are no joke. mine will haul my 28ft 5th wheel up any hill at 60mph no problem and I've left my share of hondas in the dust:lol: not to bad for 20mpg and a 4 door long box:-D
