Haha...thanks! I do think the Batis is likely the better overall landscape lens since it is filter friendly - the Sigma has a bulbous front and a built-in lens shade to protect it. Also, being an f/1.4 lens, it's pretty massive (2 lbs I think). That said, the Sigma IQ really does blow me away and it's a good deal less expensive than the Batis too.

I'm using the Sigma 1.4/35 as my 35mm prime and it fits exactly the same description, plus it's filter friendly. Best of both worlds :)

Spent some time out in Long Beach this morning, trying out the Batis 25 and Batis 18.

Nothing that great to share here, unfortunately. The weather was crap and the location was crap. Seeing what some of you post really brings home the fact that SoCal is so drab and colorless. And dumpy. I can't recall seeing a "waterfront park" anywhere else on my travels that's as shabby as what we have here. Same goes for Downtown.

That aside, I have a technical question for you PP pros. I feel like I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to sharpening. What approach do you guys follow (and I'm sure there are as many different answers as there are people here)?

I see a lot of pics on here and on FM that look very nice and sharp. And I feel like my pics, while not necessarily bad generally seem to lack that little extra oomph and contrast.
I don't know if it's just sharpening, or contrast, saturation, etc...There's just a certain look that I see very often on here and on FM that I seem to fall short of in terms of PP.

Thoughts?

I bought this and I think it's making a difference with me and recommend it:

It's expensive, in a way, yet I feel it's important to supplement my investment in expensive lenses and cameras with some good educational materials as well. Relative to my gear investment, pretty cheap. :)

Hm. That seems rather interesting (and pricey).
I'm specially wowed by the before/after samples provided. I have to say I start off with a lot of landscapes that look like his "before", haha.

Another example of how other places seem to be greener (pun intended). Very colorful, David. And it's nice to see a downtown with public transport, clean sidewalks and actual people.
(I'm starting to think I really need to move).

In contrast I give you the little drabness I was able to capture today.

Really appreciate the kind words. My whole effort in KC is specifically for tourism-based images, so they need to express a certain vibrance and interest.

Regarding LA, I have visited there several times and enjoyed my time there. When I was working on the Oregon State University stadium interiors (around 2004 or so) with my old firm HNTB, I worked extensively with the LA HNTB office architects. Also I won a couple of design awards, and the awards ceremony was hosted at the Beverly Hills hotel (lot of fun staying there!). Anyway, I always loved my visits to LA...I used to think the opposite: KC is drab midwestern, while LA has a lovely climate that seemed "greener" to me. :)

That said, they always warned me about the LA June gloom...that what you're dealing with lately? It really is hard to do much with crappy overcast skies except shoot at dusk or later.

I never thought that and certainly would never describe myself as any sort of guru. I suppose I am a fairly advanced user, but still have plenty of room for a lot of improvement.
