Unfortunately no hummers around here. The jars are open at the top (bottom of jar) but I never saw any butterflies around but it was raining when we were at that park

I like the improvement Alfredo. One thing you might try when evaluating an image for an overall tone is to add a curves adjustment layer, select either the R, G or B channel, grab the picker tool in the upper left of the box where the line graph is then place your cursor somewhere on the image and drag the picker up or down and view the results. Below is a little reminder image I made for myself as to what the complimentary colors are. If you use the picker on the neutral gray part of the image, it will change colors to match the color channel, either RGB or it's complimentary color. When done on a photograph, it makes it easy to add or subtract the selected color from the image to see if there is any improvement to your eye.

Here's my complimentary color reminder image to test color channel effects. With a curves adjustment layer on the "R" channel for example, dragging the picker up over the neutral gray portion adds red to the image and dragging it down adds cyan and so on.

Fantastic! However, I find getting colors right in LR a lot easier. In addition, you work on a RAW file which "should" preserve quality better.

Thanks David. I don't use LR, just PS so I can't compare. I use this on my RAW files as well. It's not about preserving quality so much as it is viewing my image using different tones to help me fine tune the tonal qualities that look the most natural...or look best according to my perception of what mood I want an image to convey. My eye can be easily tricked into thinking an overall white balance looks good. However, sometimes I find I can improve the colors and tones by adding a color curves adjustment layer like this.

I also like to use multiple curves adjustment layers with individual color channels to color correct old images like I just did on an old photo I found by Googling as a quick example.

Lately I have been having to work through thousands of photos from my KC trip and, of necessity, have had to do most of my editing in LR. Really starting to appreciate the power of those tools. It's been great to stretch myself in that way. Usually I just use the raw converter (LR or C1) just to get a corrected image (no blown highlights/blacks, lens corrections, pre-sharpening, etc.) into Photoshop where I do 90% of my editing. But, with thousands of images to weed through, it's just not practical (with some exceptions).

There is an unfortunate breakdown of communication here, though. The very tools you referenced for color editing in LR are equally available and useful for Gene as well - they are all found within Adobe Camera Raw. When it comes to actual raw processing there isn't much difference (that I know of) between LR and ACR. So, your initial comment is still applicable. That said, I agree with Gene about the power of curves adjustment layers, which is not available in LR/ACR. It's not easy to initially grasp conceptually, but well worth the effort.

Agree with Gene and David about curves. Most people don't realize that RGB values can be adjusted using curves. They can also be used to effect luminosity masks vs traditional channel based luminosity masks. And they are powerful in what Joel T calls iterative selective gradient masks.
