The Hasselblad Medium format compact mirrorless camera was announced today. I was looking forward but im disappointed. First, thats not a medium format camera. Its just a bigger than FF sensor but not 6x4.5. then apart from marginal resolution increase and the obious better color depth the A7RII is still up there. Of course we need to see actual tests and images but for 9000$ i can easily skip it and get myself the RX1R2 i want since weeks :)

I actually think this camera has a chance at real sales. Simple adapter gives you 20+ Hasselblad lenses immediately (they didn't mention the date of the adapter availability date) but it was mentioned in the launch video. I think they will get a lot of rich retired highend enthusiast sales (US, Japan, China), and a 2nd pro camera for the Hasselblad studio shooter for location shooting - I can also see some highend wedding shooters buying this for bridal portraits

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

But whats the benefit really? You dont get the "medium format look" by putting an f/3.5 45mm lens onto a 44mmx33mm sensor. If they had some fast lenses along, well okay but like that... High ISO is disappointing at only 25600, max shutterspeed is 1/2000s. Any person really looking for the best camera for the buck should seriously get an A7RII and save the 5000$ difference to get the 35mm 1.4 or 24-70 GM/85GM etc..

there are some HUGE limitations going to MF or in this case Jumbo full frame :p, and this is pretty much the definition of diminishing returns, however, there is a good amount to gain in look. Sharpness better, richer tones, and even the existing lenses give good amounts of blur. The sensor is still very big and for low iso shooting, it sure beats pay a considerable amount more for the super high end MF backs. Hassy + 45 = killer travel cam.

when that market matures, and you can pick up a body for 4-5K, who knows......

I don't disagree with the buy the A7Rii with Sony 24-70 as a 'better' value - but that doesn't mean this camera won't do well.

Higher than 1/2000 shutter speed is not relevant to this buyer group - these are leaf shutter lens for high SS sync speeds with studio type apertures (F4 to F11).

For the very high end studio shooter, that have a medium format workflow, this is an easy purchase if they have other Hasselblad lenses. I do slightly agree on price because I think if it could have come in $2000 less, it could have truly opened up the high end DSLR customer that is always looking for better. If this camera came in a $4999 for the 50 megapixel version and let's say $6999 for the 100 megapixel version, Canon and Nikon would not be happy.

I don't know much about MF, in general, but no, according to Ming Thein's blog:
The X1D’s image quality is not an unknown: it houses the same sensor, processor and imaging pipeline as the H6D: i.e. the best available, bar the 100MP sensor.

This does not fit Hasselblad's brand or their target demographic. It seems to me that they want their stuff priced out of the range of the typical consumer. Same with Leica.

That said, the technology is in place for an affordable-ish MF camera to come to market. I suspect Sony will bring one to market eventually...perhaps as a fixed lens camera first, but if it gains traction, perhaps on a broader scale as well.
