I got a spyder Pro took me way down to like 64% on brightness I always want to crank it
Thank you. I know what you mean. Cranking up the brightness isn't good on the eyes or for editing your photos.

Right or wrong, the one monitor I always check is my iPad. There are no controls over the picture (except dimness), so I regard it as a sort of reference monitor for how the general public would see my work. So many times I've uploaded to flickr only to have to do a quick processing revision because the image didn't quite look the way I envisioned when viewed on my iPad.
But, yes, I find the monitor luminance value along with the Photoshop interface/background tone strongly influences how I process.
Yep I do the same on my iPhone. I need to experiment some more with my PS background color. Thank you.

I have my brightness at 33 and contrast at 75. I do keep my computer room dark though, dark enough that I'm glad my keyboard is backlit.
Thanks Gene. I'm going to try brightness of 30 on my Dell monitor and recalibrate to see what the luminance value is. It had been 80 whatever the unit of measure is (candles/m^2) I think. Will see if it goes up to 100 or 110.
