So for those that have the 85 GM.

What are your final verdict?

I been reading the AF is loud but then some other folks are saying that after firmware update is not. Or that they got a second copy of the lens and now af is quiet?

How's the AF speed?

I get the occasional dust spots on my photos, but nothing too terrible. Of course I tend to shoot up to f8 or f11 (and that's when those become visible).
I'm guessing Lucas doesn't see them much because he doesn't shoot f11 landscapes as often :)

But so far, nothing that a bit of blower couldn't fix.

I change lenses like crazy. And I do it at the beach. And now I'm wondering if I need a wet clean. While I don't have any significant dust spot, I kinda wonder how much the mist from the waves and surf ends up settling on the sensor. I obviously try to avoid exposing it for too long in that general direction, but it was fairly misty. I have to think that there would be some kind of filmy residue left on the sensor (even if i cannot see it with the naked eye). Right?

it's like a piezo drive motor, think of something midway between the noisy nifty fifty and silent.

in a completely silent room, you hear it, but realistically I'm not phased by the sound one bit. Maybe a little louder than the 40 stm?

Anyhow, the AF is not fast, it's similar to the 85L, and the eye AF not super accurate like the FE 55, but it's not bad. Overall if you're ok with the price and size, it's the one to get IMO.

I'm not ok with the size for travel, and the idea of having 2 similar lenses for different purposes is costly. I do like it's bokeh very much....

I think my pick at 85 is the Batis. Smaller and lighter. And I don't think I need 1.4.

me neither, I have a few lenses that I dont really need, but love having. I technically only "need" one really good portrait lens, but instead I've got 3 very good ones

That's what I'm trying to figure out... it's time to sell my 85L mark I and can't decide between the Batis or GM.

I can get the Batis for $1000 but then I wonder will I regret it later for not going the GM route...

It's so strange to me that so many of you have so many dust issues... I get dust specs every now and then, but usually never enough to need a sensor swab and I change lenses like crazy.

I had to clean the A7R sensor every few months as it was a real dust collector. But i feel that sony has done sonething for the A7RII as after one year of use i havent cleaned the sensor. Now i see a few dust specks but it is not on the level it was with the A7R.

I didn't really 'need' the FE 85 GM since I have the Canon 85 f1.8 but I 'wanted' f1.4 and eye AF. Even with the fastest focusing lenses, I struggle with AF with kids and I don't shoot sports with the 85 so the focus speed is fine for me. As I mentioned earlier, I'm a little hard of hearing and haven't heard a sound from my FE 85 at all. AF does seem very accurate, even when shooting a self portrait using a wireless remote and wearing a baseball style hat too.

Totally subjective and I also haven't tried the GM but I love the Batis. The B85 is probably my favourite lens

Yes but we are experiencing certain failures with it. Had to return the controller to Joe for repair/replacement. Once it got
back now we're having problems with both (bought two initially, one for backup) reservoirs/drip nozzles.
Still works, but control is iffy at best. Here's my last from before out trip overseas-

I think if I were to purchase again I'd go with a company in the states for quicker turn around when things go
awry.

my 50 cents.
also havent tried the GM but these are the expectations of B85 so far:
light - have owned 85L and that was lot heavier, you really could feel that you holding lots of heavy glass in the hand, with B85 not. I was surprised about weight when 1st time took it out of the box
silent - I can hear no sound from it, so silent it is
sharp - at 1.8 its so sharp and together with eye-af, face recognition it works like a charm

had problems, that sometimes it cant lock on eye-af, but maybe I was to close to subject, needed to change focusing mode to acquire AF again.
