Last shot of my new to me Gillette razor. It was very interesting, not to mention challenging, to get the lighting and exposure right shooting on a white platform of a highly polished piece of metal. I used 2 Nissin Di700A flashes fired remotely using the Air1 Commander. One flash happened to be in a small softbox and the other bounced from a 24" umbrella. I goal was to have the highlights on the razor be white rather than try to get the background pure white...which was a piece of 8.5 x 11 paper anyway.

Excellent, looks great David. I love how you handled the lighting on the car in your processing.

What tools did you mainly use here. Viveza by any chance?

Nope, only LR and a bit of PS. An interested fella on facebook wanted to know what i did exactly, so for simplicity just copy pasted what i told him:

Well basically i adjusted white balance to my taste and evened out the the exposure by pulling down highlights und pulling up shadows as well as some minor spot adjustments to bring the car out a bit (making it brighter). Also used a little bit of clarity slider overall and excessive use for small parts of the car or the street via selective brush. After cleaning exposure and colors and everything up in LR to my taste i exported it to photoshop to make the roof black. I originally have a black roof but it was white due to too much reflection of the sky. I used a layer with blend mode color to remove unwanted tints in the cars paint with a grey brush. Then i picked up a color in the sky (orangeish) and painted with a very large brush over the left and right side of the image on a new layer with layer blend mode lighten. I did the same thing with a white brush to paint over the headlights to give it rhe look that theyre a bit flaring and actually turned on. This adds a little bit ambience, like loss of contrast from flare. The last step was making a new exposure layer and pull the offset slider just a tad to the right to lose that very deep black. I like the vintage styling so i actually play around with the lighten layer and paint or with the exposure layer offset. After everything was done i dodged and burned a few little spots out that looked odd or were too dark and had a loss of detail (for exaple the tires). Of course all the layers need different opacity to soften its look.
I hope this was explained so that you can benefit from it.

Im really surprised what a few steps can make to an image. I had just about an hour to edit this one but it shows the difference of what going into details can change.

Nice PP, well done!!!

Why didn't you use filters and some lights so you can have an original or SOOC good enough to start with? that may reduce the time of PP, or why not doing multiple exposures then go with blending, but overall you did a great job, this is type of photos where people are getting lazy to shoot it right out of camera and being more lazy to set in front of computer for PP.

The pullback

A quick shot of the lighting setup I used for photographing my new razor. Two Nissin Di700A's fired remotely by the Air1 Commander. As you can see, one flash is mounted in a softbox and the other bounced from a 24" umbrella.

I used the wireless remote that's sitting on the coffee table to take the exposures to avoid camera movement since the shutter speeds were 1/4 second to keep the iso at 100 and an f stop of f 11.

Primarily i just wanted to go out take some shots of the car with the new rims. I didnt intend to make a serious shooting. Then, a filter would have been great to reduce reflection on the roof but i dont have any filter that fits the lens i used and it is honestly too cumbersome when it can be done in post within minutes. Im not great with external lights, so i stick to natural lighting and fix what needs to be done in post. It wasnt that time consuming to be honest. If you read what i had done you would see that actually its pretty few steps to achieve a desired look.

Im also training myself with photoshop and LR as a few years ago i was top notch in that area, but somehow lost it over time when i started photography. Its also great to experiment in LR, as many things can be done in LR that i would have done in PS. And i prefer to do as much as i can in LR as i think it will preserve better quality as exporting to 16 bit tif and then to photoshop. Just my view may be that it doesnt but still an interesting challenge.

I figured out that it is a quick shoot, yes, many people don't want to spend longer time to setup their images, and that is fine.

Sort of curious as to how useful the new E-mount Voigtlander 10mm will be.
I couldn't resist, but it is an open box buy from B&H and they promise it to be here by next Friday.
Because of the holiday, it won't ship until Tuesday.

I've been looking at that myself, so will be interested in your observations – although, as I am not a landscape shooter, I'm hard-pressed to come up with an application for it. I just like the idea of that focal length, and loud GAS voices are telling me to buy something/anything, soon!
