Thanks annie thats good info, I was actually planning on printing the same image on each paper to compare. I had sort of thought Fujifilm photorag or Hahnemühle Bamboo would be best but wasnt entirely sure. I had some of my landscapes on the wall printed as standard photo prints but the colours dont look as they should any more so think I need to go down the fine art paper route. I want to start printing more than I currently do. Ill give the bamboo a try based on your advice - thanks!

On another note, print related. You know those times when you are with friends or family and you look back over old photos. Everybodys got a shoe box (or 10) full somewhere in the house. I really love that but I now have a fear that with the digital age that could be lost. Sure ive got the electronic edits of all my photos but what happens when im gone? Callum will be left with hard drives full of files. Years could pass without him doing anything with them and as that happens technology changes and before you know it your left with hard drives that are not even compatible with modern computers. Heck ive got hard drives in the loft with files on them and I recently tried to hook them up via an external hard drive caddy and the format wasnt readable anymore and they were less than 10 years old. Does anyone else worry about that or is it just me?

Oh, no, it's not just you, Eddie – I've been thinking about it quite often recently, but have not come up with a satisfactory answer. Cloud storage would probably take care of the evolving technology problem – the Cloud companies would presumably evolve their storage technology and access methods at the same rate as everyone else, so the data should remain accessible well into the future.

But which Cloud storage companies will survive the vagaries of the market? If one guesses right on that question, then who will remember (or be bothered) to pay the annual fees for the next couple of decades?

The only sure answer seems to be to print out all our images, and put them in a shoe-box, to be brought out and sifted through in the future by our children or grandchildren with their friends and family!

I've started the process of sorting out 6x4 prints for everything. My wedding photographer mate showed me a site he uses for photo boxes which store 400 6x4 prints inside (you can design the box etc). My son was 3 last week so I'm going to start there and print 3 years worth of family snapshots and get boxes made up to group them. These are the ones I couldn't lose so want to make a point of doing it.

I should add, my 52 week project I do each year on Callum is printed on 8x10 prints as I go along. It's really great looking back through them especially at that print size. That's about the only thing I've printed though! Apart from some landscapes that were on my walls at home

its the opposite I'm worried about. Lots of digital images and nothing on paper

I have mine backed up in 3 different places. Locally on external storage. NAS at parents house that is updated once a month and cloud. So chance of loosing files are slim to none.

Shoebox is not a safe storage either. It can be lost, images will degrade, house can catch on fire, flood, robbery, box can be lost in a move. Bugs can destroy it as well. There are hundreds of possibilities .

This is a nice option :)
Raid6

People spend thousands of dollars on camera equipment but then skimp on safe storage options.

Just playing with a portrait I took today at my favorite VFW. This is one of the bartenders there. Below is a link to a before/after comparison. I'll just put the "after" image up here.

The same things can affect the hard drives/ storage devices too. The best bet is to have multiple copies at multiple locations. However my initial point wasnt really a backup worry (I have a good backup system set up). Its more me thinking about the legacy. Physical photos are easily passed down through the generations. My worry is my robust digital backup system wont be.

I think you have missed my point slightly. I completely agree a robust backup system is a total requirement for any photographer and with that in place the chanes of total loss are slim

On topic of prints, I add date stamped to all my 4x6 then print. Have thousands of prints, need to do about a thousand more to get caught up. Nothing beats seeing a physical album in person.

My wife is a big scrap booker so we have stacks of scrap books. We use a canon selphy 4x6 printer for prints....also have a Pixma pro for larger prints.

The place I use prints the file name on the back so I've got into the habit of putting the date in the file name.

Sorry to ask a stupid question but is it basically a blank book and she just adds the photos? Or does she add text and other stuff too?

Edit - never mind, just googled it

I kinda dig them in the front, so people dont ask when it was taken. I also arrange in chronological order :-)
