Totally off topic here but what the hey!

Today, July 11th is the 53rd anniversary of my joining the US Navy. The year was 1963 and I can't believe how long ago that was...and how quickly the time has gone between then and now.

I'm buying this round!

This morning. Downsized from 42 MP. Wide open, 10mm Voigtlander focus set hard at infinity. Vivid image setting, auto ISO. Program mode. Not a landscape, per se, but an interesting observation made:
Closing down to f8 actually degrades image edges more than at f5.6. Go figure.
No sharpening, no editing other than the profile set in the menu.

Good that it wont be an issue. I can imagine that even at f/5.6 everything is still in focus that wiiiiide

And the answer to that question mostly is "no" since photography isn't a priority here and I don't have a donkey that sh*ts money. If I would buy new photography gear every (few) month(s), I'd feel like I'd be burning money and that just feels wrong. \

A donkey that sh*ts money is called a job.

Well, not everyone has a huge salary. And there are other expenses that are more important than new camera gear.

Of course. But I think we should be careful not to criticize others, directly or indirectly, for how they choose to spend their money because we're all in different places in life, and have different sets of priorities.

What adds to that is, that you dont really need to spend anything to get new gear all few months. Since 1 year i am trying to only buy new things with money i got from selling gear i dont want anymore. Of course you always lose a bit most of the time. But the better gear you buy, the better you care for it, the better you look for a good moment to sell the more you get by selling those.

Its worked out for me. I was able to buy a leica summilux 50. i wouldnt have bought it straight, as like jocau said it would have felt like burning money. But i did it because i sold things so i didnt really lose anything and feel a lot better since doing it that way. Now i sold a A7S for almost as much as i paid, a fuji x100s where i lost about half the value, plus a voigtländer 40 1.4 for almost as much as i got it. Now i invest a few hundred for an RX1R2. Now it feels like spending like 400$ for a 3500$ camera. I also try to avoid buying new, except when im totally sure im gonna love it and keep it (which you honestly never can say lol)

Well, I'm not criticizing others. I've said it before that everybody spends their money the way they want to. Me saying that I wouldn't spend my money on buying new photography gear every (few) month(s) doesn't mean that I'm criticizing folks. It's just describing my own situation.

I tend to treat my tools the same on the field, finding the right focal length for the scene, regardless of the cost of lens... I do bring sub $100 lenses to shoot with me :-P

both have very high level optics, so I'm fine, I dont need super optics, that last 1-5% doesnt bother me, at the same time, I do have very specialized gear. A set for event shooting, a set for astro, and a set for general landscapes. Some of the parts interchangeable, some not. If I stop acquiring gear today, I'de be in good shape still, but what fun is that? Part of the fun is acquiring stuff you havent tried before. With it comes experience, so it's not completely money/time wasted.

Well, first you need to have gear that's worth something. I basically have 1 camera and 3 lenses and only 1 lens is worth a decent amount of money. But selling things takes time and time is money. I also only buy new (only bought used once in my life).

For example: I still wouldn't be able to afford the A7RII body (new) if I completely used 2 monthly salaries on it.
