unexpected surprise on DXO, 24-70GM updated scores with the A7rii, and the sharpness scores improve dramatically

https://www.dxomark.com …nted-on-Sony-A7R-II__1035 (external link)

FE 55 on the A7rii, a whopping 40mp score on sharpness, an 11mp jump. It's safe to assume that the full sharpness of the lens is yet to be known, it's simply outresolving the A7rii with that type of number.
https://www.dxomark.com …nted-on-Sony-A7R-II__1035 (external link)

FE35, also a huge number boost in max sharpness
https://www.dxomark.com …nted-on-Sony-A7R-II__1035 (external link)

Batis 25, up 14mp, huge jump
https://www.dxomark.com …nted-on-Sony-A7R-II__1035 (external link)

Loxia 21, huge jump
https://www.dxomark.com …nted-on-Sony-A7R-II__1035 (external link)

basically, the A7rii body has pulled incredible numbers compared to the A7r, wonder how much is due to shutter shock....

Well, that makes me happy. Just when I feel a bit annoyed at Sony, this reminds me I am shooting one of the very best cameras out there in terms of glass and sensor.

What I find ridiculous is that DXO waited this long to test with an A7R2. The body's been out for 2 years now.

On my monitor, I think the overall tones are a bit red and I wish her eye shadow wasn't so dark. Here's a quick adjustment I made for comparison.

(Now there may be a bit too much green. )

[GIFS ARE NOT RENDERED IN QUOTES]

Too green for my taste. Vinz' original looks best to me.

I think I'm finally happy with this image after editing it 3 different times. I wanted to strike a balance between the bright stained glass windows, the arches, and the darker pews. I applied targeted masks using Lumenzia to manually blend in 5 exposures. No Photomatix this time which was too crunchy for my taste on my previous 2 attempts.

That Batis 18 continues to impress! :)

A couple of my own, from this weekend's trip to LA.

1) Dorothy Chandler Pavillion.
A bit hard to photograph with the crappy lighting at that time of morning.
30 second exposure with the Batis 18 and the Haida 10-stop ND (to blur out the tourists).
Not too happy with the composition. Really wanted the CV 10 to capture several buildings in that area.

2) Cathedral of our lady of the Angels.
Not at all the most photogenic cathedral. So I opted to go for a more urban gritty feel in my PP (which is actually exactly how that part of town feels).
Again the Batis 18.
This one was handheld. In fact, the camera was tripod mounted, but i held the tripod up over my head to get the perspective above the chain link fence.

Cool stuff Nadim! Batis 18 is just amazing. :) Although I'm not that impressed with my Haida CPL, I am reasonably pleased with my Haida 6 and 10-stop filters. Colors seem to look good.

The CV 10mm is a really extreme FOV that it makes a sort of charicature of architecture. I love it, but try to shoot it in a different way than other lenses. Man, I'm going to hate to give it up, because I've gotten some really cool shots with it, but am leaning towards doing it since I've got that Laowa 12mm coming in soon. Shoot me a note if you want it, otherwise it could be going up on FM soon.

Beautiful workmanship Alfredo. It's a very natural/realistic looking multiple exposure blend.

Have you looked at Thomas Brigantino's YT channel? He's got some clever Lumenzia and general PS tips and workflows. I was impressed with his sky selection technique utilizing Photoshop's Calculations interface. Lumenzia's so amazing that I don't even touch Raya Pro any more.

Thank you! It's a beautiful chapel. Yep I have watched some of TB's videos. Good stuff! I actually applied his method to the above image. It's basically controlling the luminosity mask using the lasso tool and having Lumenzia feather the transition. Works well. I used that technique also on the lounge image from the hotel. I still use some parts of Raya Pro and even the TK Actions panel but I'm primarily working off Lumenzia. Isn't it amazing the power of these tools? How do they come up with this stuff?

Greg responded to my comment and said he explained his method for editing his black and white image in a newsletter. I will keep an eye out for since I just signed up for it. I thought I had already signed up but apparently didn't.

Crazy isn't it...and there are not even that many of us. Such a great thread. :)

Also crazy: the entire a7 platform is not yet 3 years old yet! Not that long ago people were dumping hard on Sony for pushing out too many bodies and not enough glass. Now just look at how much quality glass is available on the still very young platform.

Yeah, Very very happy with both Batis lenses. Will get the 85 to complete the set at some point. I know the 10mm is an extreme FL. Widest I've ever shot was 14mm.
Having said that, I get very frustrated trying to fit these buildings into a shot while maintaining the correct vertical perspectives.
I am very particular about that. I hate when buildings lean backwards. So I try to shoot at a complete horizontal level. The problem I ran into in DTLA doing that was that most of the interesting buildings, you have to be on the same side of the street, right up against them (otherwise, you get a ton of sidewalk and traffic in the shot, and not enough headroom, if you want the buildings straight).
And at those distances, I can never fit the entire building in the shot even at 15mm.

I'll post an example tomorrow (when I process it) of my attempt at shooting the Mark Taper forum. It really could've used a very very wide shot.

True!

I still wish they'd come out with more lower and mid range lenses though, Canon and Nikon still have them thoroughly beat in that regard. Also, no more freaking 50mm lenses Sony!

It's good that they re-tested those lenses on the a7rII. Its pretty clear that when it comes to DXO, there isn't any point at all in comparing lenses shot on different resolution bodies. There has to be some way to normalize the scores based on the sensor resolution (I thought they were doing this already but I guess not?)

They indeed did. but its not possible to test a nikon lens on a canon body or a E mount lens on a nikon body. With advanced sensor technology and more precise the A7RII every lens can now be tested on the same sensor.

Thats why nikon lenses generally had better scores prior to the 5DS announcement as nikon had 36mpx offerings while canons had 24mpx at most.

Im just wondering why it took them soo long to start testing on an A7R2
