One thing I am considering is to split the difference between Batis 18 and 25 lenses and go with the single Loxia 21mm. That would free my budget to keep the 10mm, which I'd rather not sell (it has a sunstar much like the L21). I've been looking through my 16-35mm photos to analyze what FL I gravitate towards and, surprisingly, it's around 20mm.

soooo...keep the Sigma 20ART... It has AF...and is one stellar lens...I can't wait to add it to my bag...it might be next...after the fall family session season is over. I am renting it next week too...just cuz.

Does anyone have images with the B18 sunstars? Curious to see what they look like to be called ugly...and so that I don't risk a sunstar shot on it next week and be bummed that I did...

Here is an example Batis 18 sunstar (external link)...not great, but certainly not bad either. I imagine the Batis 18mm stars don't detract, but don't put that sweet icing on the cake the way the Loxia 21mm stars do.

You are so right about the Sigma 20mm. It is so phenomenal that I was explaining to my wife that it would be the hardest Canon-mount lens in my kit to sell. If I do even sell it, it will be the last item I sell. Not only do I love it, but it was only $899 brand new. Hard to sell something with that sort of massive bang for the buck. It really has only two negatives: not filter friendly and it's very heavy.

What are you thinking for yourself Travis? Thinking about (eventually) getting both Sigma 20 and Batis 18?

I like the look Fuji better. :-)

This thing looks like a powershot point and shoot.

I mean, I prefer Fuji's looks too, but it'd be kinda lame for everyone to start just copying what they're doing, that's how we ended up with what we know now as the modern DSLR in the first place, everyone basically just copied each others designs.

I'll have to agree to disagree about the looks of the M5 though, I honestly like it's look better than the a7 bodies ;)

canon had the touchscreen down since the original EOS-M days, it was awesome, that was about the only thing going for that camera :-P

Face detect and eye detect help alleviate the pain somewhat, but still would love touch AF and a responsive touch interface, the FN menu would be so nice with it..... Sony HAS to give touch screen on next iteration.

I too would prefer a touchscreen, but I'd also be happy with a focusing nub like the mid/high end DSLR's and high end Fuji's now have. I'm usually a center point only guy, but with the X-Pro2 I've been using a lot of other focus points, just like I did with my EOS M.

If the 80D - a crop frame - has 13.2, then 13.5 on a FF is a cinch. No reason to be skeptical that 5D IV won't be very similar DR to 1DX II: https://www.dxomark.com …as/Canon/EOS-1D-X-Mark-II (external link) .

Still not touching the a7R II at 13.9 stops DR...but it's close enough to not be the differentiating issue that it has been.

Eh, honestly I don't think it's been an issue since the 5D3/6D for most users. I posted in several threads back in those days an extreme example with my 6D where I pulled the highlights almost a full stop and pushed the shadows by at least 1 stop and the shot looked great... I get that for large print shooters and professional landscapers this can sometimes be a big deal, but for most users it's really overblown.

David Arbogast wrote in post #18122643 (external link)
Absolutely. Banding was mostly gone with the 5DS R - I rarely ever saw it - by now I think the issue has been relegated to being just a horrible memory of Canon past.

I never even saw it on my 6D, definitely did on my T2i though.

mystik610 wrote in post #18122654 (external link)
The first M had a pure contrast detect system which is of the same caliber of the a7r/a7s. I think with the EOS M3 they added hybrid AF...same system in the a7rII/a6300, but not as well executed. The dual pixel AF is a pretty big deal..at least on paper. You basically have a second set of pixels acting as phase detect points. From what we've seen in the likes of even the 1dXII the performance is about on par to sony's' hybrid AF systems...a little inferior in terms of tracking. The big upside is in how smooth the focus is for video. Either way, dual pixel AF has tremendous upside and its a big deal.

Couple that with the higher DR of Canon's latest sensors, and this is a legitimate contender to the a6300.

Actually the first M was one of (if not the) the first mirrorless cameras to use a hybrid AF system, that's why so many of the EF and EF-S lenses worked as fast as the native lenses did... it's just that it was basically a BETA project and it just sucked.

I too am a huge fan of the dual pixel AF though, it's about time they bring it to mirrorless, we all thought the EOS M2 would have it

nekrosoft13 wrote in post #18122754 (external link)
I had the M3 and touch screen was annoying... I would turn it off and my fiance would turn it on... Then when I would use it and put the camera strap on my neck I would get a lot of accidental shots.

I've never understood leaving your camera on while walking around with it hanging at your neck... why not just flip it on and off when you're taking shots? It's way better on your battery life anyway.

genesimmons wrote in post #18122757 (external link)
Jeezus dude I don't think I would brag about spending 1800 hours on a video game. Thatsca big chunk of life. That's some serious mind rot. And jeezus if ur gonna spend 820 on a phone u coud buy a used original a7 and cheap adapter to use your canon lenses. My 120 blu phone does every thing u described and it's 120.

Mind rot? There have been countless studies to prove that video games actually have very positive effects on critical thinking, reflexes, hand/eye coordination, etc...

genesimmons wrote in post #18122797 (external link)
We never had cable as a kid so never watched tv much we played and rarely watch TV now . Its been proven a 10000 times aND doesn't take rocketscience to know violent video game have descencatized today's youth to think violence is ok. How many shootings this week??? Bet those shooters had great mental reflexes so I guess there is positives to staring at a screen

Um... no, it simply hasn't. I'd love to see a study where you think it has though, maybe start a thread for it in the general-off-topic section and link it here, I'd be happy to debate it with you, just not in this thread ;)

Also, I've been shooting guns since I was about 7 years old, owned my first gun at 10 and have played video games (even the violent ones) for much longer than that even and guess what... I've never shot a person, nor had even the inkling of a desire to.

You remind me of this woman I saw when I was in high school working at a KayBee toys; her son came up to the counter after her with some plastic gun toy and was super excited about it. She got immediately irate and told him that he wasn't allowed to be playing with guns, ever.

Then the boy rather witfully replied "What about my water guns?" and she said "That's different, people have been playing with water guns for... practically forever!"... it took all of my fiber to not bust out laughing.

What does she think playing with water guns is emulating? Also, the notion that toy guns existed before actual guns is hilarious on its own.

David Arbogast wrote in post #18122801 (external link)
OK, you're one of those. Got it. Sorry, it hasn't been proven 10000 times, but I'm not going to argue with your belief system. I play all the time and I own no guns and abhor actual violence and war. :)

This... except I do own a couple of guns ;)

Here is one from this morning. Heavy crop. This was shot at f11 so the lights should have had nice crisp star bursts but not in this case. I should note that my lens had fogged up as soon as I removed the lens cap. However, the building on the lower left is in focus, not hazy so I don't think that's the issue. I was on a tripod too.

those are not horrible...not super crisp but not terrible and unattractive...

me...who knows what I am doing...I love access to the lens lineup for Canon...and the ability to use them on the A7R2...I can't decide if I want to go full native at some point, but I don't have that kind of budget to work with right now...I just added the 135L, waiting to see what Photokina brings for Sigma Art line...85, 105, 135...and I want to add a fast wide angle like a 24mm but also want the 20mmART...my problem is that starting to do this more commercially I also need to start building duplicates to make sure I am covered in the event of a equipment failure on a shoot...I spent the night tonight filling out permit forms, business license forms and all sorts of other crap...

now its time to chill out with the Captain...

I leave you all for the night with our dirty dog...she was rooting around in the yard...shot with the background killer 135 f/2L....focus was on the nose, intentionally...that blistered and scarred nose...

I'll post some when I get home. They're not that horrible. Just a bit distracting IMO.
But as I said, I'm not a huge fan of the stars anyway. In most cases, they seem to get in the way of something. Specially at night.

I don't do this commercially but I'm constantly on the fence about native vs canon vs going back to canon body for ease of use.
I only wish I had unlimited budget. So many lenses I want to try. CV 10, Loxia 21, Sigma 20. I still also want a proper 135. The 2 I have are manual. I really hope we get a Batis 135 this fall.
I still want the Batis 85 too. The 24-70GM.
The list goes on.

Violence in people has existed long before video games, and not all video games are violent. I don't play video games much these days, but still go through spurts of playing Civilization V. Its hardly violent at all and a deeply analytical game that gives your brain a good workout. ÏI've logged hundreds of ours on that game since it was released 4+ years ago.

Also, it's a documented statistical fact that violent crime rates in the US have been, on the whole, steadly declining over the last three decades (external link). If video games lead to violent crimes then what accounts for the steady decline in violent crime?

Maybe obomas gun control is actually working(laughs) or maybe the youth today are gping ouside instead of staring at a screen. But seriously if violent crimes are on the decline that's a good thing no matter the reason.

Was out for a walk earlier around a lake at the scenic town of Celebration in Florida. Saw numerous alligators in the water and nothing between them and me apart from a patch of grass that lined the footpath. People werent kidding when they said the gators were everywhere!. Certainly heightened my senses (and made me seriously think about where to stand when peering through the viewfinder)

He said 3 decades, not 8 years ;)

Also, video game sales are at an all time high, more and more people are playing games these days, even while outside (who hasn't heard of Pokemon Go at this point?).

Of course violent crime being down is a good thing! The reason people don't know these things is that information and manipulation are EVERYWHERE now. It's the easiest thing ever to get information out there, so of course when something horrible happens we all hear about it immediately and continually. Massacres are not a new thing, they're just way more public now than they've ever been before and they are and have always been extremely tragic, but blaming video games (or really most things beyond the individual for that matter) on their existence is extremely naive.
