Absolutely. But where the skill comes into play is in seeing interesting compositions with inherently 'uninteresting' subject matter and having the vision to see an interesting composition, and the technical aptitude to nail all of the technical aspects on the fly. When done well, I don't think this type of photography is any less great than the stuff we consider 'serious photography'. It just different.

There's a family photojournalism thread on POTN where some truly great stuff is posted regularly. A couple of us are active on it (I need to post more to it), but in case you guys haven't seen it:

https://photography-on-the.net …ead.php?t=1419800&page=54

That's the thread I was referring to. I struggle to nail the theme. It's more difficult than it looks

It's a struggle for me too. The people there have an eye for composition that doesn't come naturally to me at all
. I really like the shots you've posted of callum though!

Great articule and on point. The thing about 'serious' photography (i.e. landscapes and posed portraiture) is that chances are that our best work is something that countless of other people have done before. 'snapshots', which to me is just photojournalism type photography, is about capturing a unique moment, and very often something more personally relevant than our 'serious' work.

The one thing I dislike about the article is that she still doesn't consider her 'snapshots' to be serious photography. There's actually a skill to taking 'snapshots' that's IMO under-appreciated. If the quality of her 'snapshots' are not up to snuff, that's on her :-). It's less of a technical skill and more a matter of having the vision to 'see' interesting photos in our everyday lives and the creativity and technical aptitude to compose them well on the fly. Lucas is particularly talented here. I sort of suck at it but am constantly working on it. It always stood out to me when I shot weddings because wedding photography is basically a series glorified snapshots, and very often my second shooters would do a better at capturing candid photos than I would.

Some 'snapshots' from my middle child's first soccer game y'day.

isnt it funny....we started with point and shoots and then for one reason or another we thought about getting better gear to be better photographers...then we took classes to make ourselves better....poured countless hours and money on tutorials, forums, practicing and photoshop, learning how to light and whatever other avenues of photography.....then we suddenly realize how it all didnt matter and that what matters most are the memories and the smiling faces we captured.....and then we all go back to a point and shoot......

well....very expensive point and shoot but still :) :p

I just bought the RGG EDU Dixie Dixon - Pratik Naik shooting and retouching tutorial. Dixie is the shooter and most of her shots are lifestyle and i think i'm going in that direction. Although it's a stage shot because it's more of a fashion/commercial thingy, the results are like candids and photo journalism. Applicable to family portrait too like instead of posing them, let them ride their bike and shoot. Loving it.

Hehe I've always admired people who shoot candids well because I know how hard it is. It takes a certain vision and personality, because you're inserting yourself into situations, to do it well.

That is very much how I have become of late. Years ago I used to try to get things perfect, edit away like crazy, etc and now especially with family, days out type of things I just shoot away with minimal editing as I'm going for those ' memories' and in no way the perfect 'technical' shot.
Just look at my recent "West Bay" holiday album on Flickr. Yes there's some time spent on careful long exposure shots but there's also a lot of 'snapshots' - there's also film shots coming through that aren't even accurately focused....... ;)

same here with a small kid, you don't have time to get things perfect, its basically shoot and go running after them.

Just in case anyone is curious how I lit my hand that I composited in with my car, I have the Aputure Amaran HR672C Bi-Color LED Flood Light Panel. I can dial in the color temperature and adjust the brightness. It isn't the brightest out there and I may get their "LightStorm" version next but for now, this works adequately for me.

Here's the setup photo and the result. I used two foam core boards to form the 'stage' and background in this case.

Not really Vinz. I know what should or could be done to improve the shot and to be honest since this is my daughter, I'd rather not share the raw file.

that how I feel.. I'm rather private person, I never post pictures of family in public places online...

Well, I do post family photos at my Flickr page on occasion but I have their permission to do so and I think I'm careful about the types of shots of them I post as well.
