forum: Sony Digital Cameras

Like others have mentioned I wouldn't trust the weather sealing on these cams. I have had my a7 out in the cold on a few occasions and I had it in my coat then take it out for shots and within minutes it would act up. The lcd and settings would bounce all over the place on Thier own and it would switch between lcd and evf on its own. I couldnt shoot with it.I had to bring it inside to warm up then worked fine. Not very tough outside.

on the gear front...I have been having a mental dilemma...I had high hopes that the A7R2 could hang at the track, but proved that if it can, it isn't with me and the way I shoot...I want to scale back on my gear, especially since I have not used the 5D2 since getting the Sony, it seems like a waste to have it just sitting in a bag...so I have been considering finding a 1Dx on the used market to be my race car/sports camera that can also be a backup FF if I need it...and keep shooting mostly adapted lenses on the Sony and just maintain the split personality system...I do want to add the B18...I really, really want that lens...

Are you totally against APS-C? If not, then the a6500 looks to fit the bill.

If its FF all the way, I say wait until the a7 cameras get updated with the front end LSI, continuous EVF etc etc etc. Expect them to be pricey though.

Your last paragraph has helped me realise it's not the camera I'm after. The search continues. If only the x100T AF was faster in lower light.

Been keeping an eye out for cheaper a6300 bodies now that the 6500 has been announced but the used prices are holding firm!

Yeah I'm keeping an eye on the a6300 too. We'll see how the prices move once people actually get the a6500 into their hands. I have a hunch that they won't move much.

Used 1Dx bodies ain't exactly cheap either. I would go the 6500 or next gen a7 route if I was you.

I wish it was as easy spending my own money as it is doing it for others ;)

Went home for lunch and unboxed the godox 860...could not try it out because the li-ion battery was not charged. Then I got to wondering what would happen if I ran out of battery mid-shoot and went to look up extra batteries. They're $40 a pop

Edit...supposedly these things can go through 650 full power pops on a single charge. If that's really the case then it should be fine...

I am not opposed to APSC, my 7D that I shoot at the track with now is...and it does a great job at it...just looking to upgrade it really, and get a FF that can do sports, good with low light and good with noise...I might have some opportunities to do more racecars and some sports in the future...my issue with the A6500 is the size, it is so small, the viewfinder is off to one side, and sticking a 200 f/2 on that camera just seems like it would be hard to hang on to it...I actually really like the size of a canon pro body, or gripped regular body at the track, that heft helps me balance the gear when doing pans...slow pans. a little tiny body camera is going to be trouble for me over a long day.

no...its not cheap, but if I can sell off the 5D2 then there is less out of pocket, and I get a pretty killer camera to do sports/racecars with...the 7D would stick around as the backup for that work, especially since they are worth almost nothing on the used market, and I really like that camera...

the idea of a next gen Sony would be nice...but until its out and specs are known...its all pipedreams...could it actually compete...we will have to see.

In that case wait and see what Sony does early next year. The writing is on the wall with the a99II and the a6500 as to what the next gen a7 cameras will be like.

I agree the ergonomics and size of the a6x are not ideal for use with large lenses.

I was super paranoid about putting the big 200 f/2 on the Sony, I didn't want it to break the mount, so I either had two hands on the whole rig, or carried everything by the foot of the lens...but man the images of those two together were great...

Have you thought about the new Canon 5DIV? Sounds like it would fit all your criteria and is about the same price as a used 1DX.

I'm hoping for an a77iii. The mark 2 is a BIF machine a 3rd Gen would eat the D500 alive with the sensor tech Sony has now. Now if Sony's 500mm didn't cost $13,000 :(

But Annie it's a Canon and doesn't have a Sony sensor ;)

It's really close though, isn't it? Do you like your 1DX II?

Love the 1DXii for BIF close to mid distance. The AF is freaky incredible. I came back from last weeks Florida trip with over 4K images, streams and streams of BIFs, every wing beat....but how many do you need :) So comparing the 1DXiis sensor to the A7Riis the Sony is in a huge league above, plus I will crop into the 1DX image only so far...that is one reason I've pre orderd the A7Rii + 1DXii= Sony a99ii.
Pre ordered the RX100 v too but that is another story.
