The B18 and B25 set a new level of sharpness for me, nothing else I've tried compares. The lox21 is supposed to be better still which is mind boggling (and the reason I still feel the need to try it one day)

I was all set to buy another body of some sort this winter with bonus money from work...and I think that after using the 5DIV, I am going to hold off, and invest in some lenses first..the B18 and B85 are top two on my list. That means less on gear, and I can put down the wood floors the SO would like...earns some brownie points for later when the A7R3 comes out...I sure hope that it can do sports.

Sounds like a plan Travis. Also I'm still curious if the 6500 can be a genuine sports camera. Looking forward to more reviews on that one as it will indicate how well the next a7x could be

Sharpness between my Lox 21 and Batis 18 is close. I would give a slight edge to the Batis. Lox 21 has it beat on sun stars and micro contrast though.

David, very interesting use of the Batis 85. Nice pop in the image.

I would appreciate a recommendation from you flash experts and this is what I'm considering: a small form-factor flash - size that is proportional to the a7R II - to give me just a little touch of fill light in some low-light situations (like a low-light portrait). Anything to recommend along those lines? Would the Sony HVL-F32M be a good pick?

If they had shaped the thing like the A7 body...and made the viewfinder in the middle...made it more like a camera and less like a rangefinder...I would be all over it. But with the design as it is, I don't see that working well from an ergonomics standpoint...I could be wrong...

Just hold the camera out from you at arm's length (Jason Lanier style) and use the screen on the back. I'm just so sure you could do that for hours and hours on end while handholding a long super-telephoto like an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II hehe. :p

Actually the viewfinder in that position allows you to keep your left eye on the action a bit more readily than having the viewfinder in the center. You get used to it.

I'm not familiar with the Sony model but I really like the nissin i40

Size looks perfect. That's the sort of small-scale flash what I want. Thanks!

It's also got a decent guide number for its size, it has TTL and it also has a (not so) secret HSS mode

Nissin i40 is the best balance of size and power IMO. Really small but lots of juice.

I think having the viewfinder in the middle is over rated. All that does for me is get more nose 'grease' on the LCD. :-)
