Landscape shooters - what's your thoughts on the automated multirow pano heads - gigapan, ioptron etc? Overkill?

Anyone use a nodal ninja?

I have a Nodal Ninja rotator (RD-8 ??), which is very nice for getting perfectly spaced shots. On top of that I have a RRS gimbal and nodal slide.

The electronic ones - I haven't seen Ioptron - seem a bit too cumbersome to me, though I've always looked longingly at them. If you really expected to make panos with great regularity it might be good. For me, though, I would probably just get a Nodal Ninja setup - they look good.

i was trying to remember your setup after I posted that, I remember an image of it previously.

I'm actually now thinking of adding a levelling base and nodal rail with arca clamp to the rotating clamp I already have, that way I will be able to do single row panos with minimal kit. I can also use the camera in portrait orientation to gain back a bit of sky and foreground. I'm currently trying to work out if the 200mm nodal rail is long enough

A minimal single row setup is ideal - easier to use. For single row panos means you'll likely be using shorter focal lengths and 200mm sounds fine. Pretty sure even the Batis 85mm would be Ok on it (I can check if you want). My slide is about that length. Longer telephotos need longer slide.

Its this one here im looking at - http://www.ebay.co.uk …geName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (external link)

It gives about 140mm on the rail. I just checked the Batis 85 (my longest lens) and its about 110mm so I reckon this rail will be fine. My only concern is it potentially being too long with a wide angle attached, would I end up seeing the end of the rail in the shot?

Hi Floyd

Never used the nodal Ninja but used an RRS Multi-row pano kit for a number of years when I was shooting a large amount of panos. I really liked the design because it was very modular which made it easy to travel with, some of the components could be used for other purposes as well.

Overkill for anything I would print, so I skip.

My limit is a single 120mm nodal rail, small, works on the stuff I have. I tend to move too much to dedicate time for super panoramas.

David, since you were asking about the i40...I just shot a wedding on it because the hot-shoe on my Godox 860 broke. Recycle times could be better, but plenty of power on tap.

On another note....Sony plastic hot-shoes are the worst idea ever. My Godox 860 was in an octabox along with the godox ad360 (canon version with a metal mount) using a double bracket. Some wind knocked the octabox over and the Sony plastic hot-shoe broke, and the Canon hot-shoe was fine. I'm never using a Sony speed light in an outdoor off camera set-up ever again....

Thanks! Are you saying all the flashes for Sony have a plastic hot shoe, regardless of brand (your Godox shoe broke)? I'm a little confused. I think I saw some complaints on Amazon about the i40 shoe as well.
