Thanks vinz, I thought that was for peaking and couldn't understand why the magnify option wasn't what I was looking for. Sorted now

My Loxia 21 arrived and I done a decentering test and it looks fine. Struggling with focus though! Having read a lot about the lens on FM forum it seems most people say for landscape apertures focus until you hit the infinity hard stop then back it off a tad. In my testing when I layer both images (one on the hard stop and one backed off a tad) in photoshop so that I can click between the layers the backed off image is much sharper in the foreground but things on the horizon go soft. Maybe im backing it off too much? How much is "a tad"? Im sure its something ill work out with practice but it seems difficult at the moment.

Carlo / Alfredo - How did you guys find it at first? How do you set focus for landscapes?

My copy is hard stop is infinity fyi

I use MF quite a lot even on the Batis. Also I had the Loxia 21mm for several days and had little trouble with it.

To focus I open the aperture all the way to get the full DOF effect...then focus magnify where I want the focal plane and focus. You can eliminate the annoying step of opening the aperture by turning off the "setting effect" in the "Live View Display" (third menu page in "Custom Settings").

The only lens I've ever struggled to focus is the 10mm simply because the CV 10mm is only f/5.6 wide open, which has a HUGE DOF at that aperture.

Thanks David!

Awesome images from the Laowa 12mm! All in tripod?

Thanks Alfredo. They're all longish exposures, so tripod was needed for sure.

A7xx Gurus, How big is the jump from original A7 To A7RII ?? In terms of IQ, AF Speed with adapter.
I see lots of differences spec wise. My biggest gripe on A7 is AF (of canon lens+adaptor) is so pathetic I prefer manual focus.
A7RII at price of $2400 is too good to pass on. If I can sell my A7 for 600 odd, the upgrade cost would be $1800. Is it worth the upgrade?

The only lens I've ever struggled to focus is the 10mm simply because the CV 10mm is only f/5.6 wide open, which has a HUGE DOF at that aperture. Heck, on the Laowa 12mm the only thing that works for me with that lens is to crank it all the way to the hard stop at infinity and set it to f/11.

Thanks David, I use MF 100% of the time for landscapes (if tripod mounted) even with my Batis lenses. On the Batis I set the OLED to infinity and I get maximum front to back sharpness (ive tested both lenses at various settings and infinity is best on mine). On my very limited time with the Loxia so far i found it fine when focus magnifying to a specific subject but was just trying to work out what the Loxia version of my Batis "set it to infinity and go" technique.

I asked the same question on FM and Fred responded with his technique and also an alternative of focussing on the mid zone (which threw me at first) - http://www.fredmiranda.com …391948/76?b=2#lastmessage (external link)

Interesting about focussing wide open then stopping down - ill try that out

In a word yes. However A7RII + Native is even better in terms of AF (or A7II + Native)

The a7R II is my favorite camera..........ever. Go for it...definitely a big step up over a7 in most every way.

Much superior high ISO (and proper colors at higher ISO), the in-body stabilizer improves IQ for non-IS lenses, 42MP offers superior resolving power and crop-ability, AF with Canon lenses feels nearly as quick as a native Canon camera.

The IBIS makes it a bit heavier, which is the only downside I can think of right off.

Thank you gentlemen. Time to upgrade.
Yes version 3 is around the corner, hence they are discounting.
However, Version 3 might carry a $4K+ price tag.

it's like night and day between the older and newer cameras. I have the original A7r and A7rii, and the idea of keeping the A7r to rack up the shutter to keep my A7rii shutter low.... that didnt happen. I cant stop using the A7rii, it's such a complete camera comparatively. More accurate colors SOOC, ibis, AF, EFCS, 4K, high ISO, all of those make a big difference.

yeah, kinda what they all said...I had the A7R for a month...when I learned about the AF change for the RII...I was sold...and have not looked back....

At Disney, I used native lenses for all but one thing...they would focus in all sorts of light, bright, dark, anything...the 70-200 had more issues than the Batis..but when I put the Sigma 50 ART on...it was so much noticeably slower, in daylight....it was an eye opener...now I need to start building up a native kit...gotta hit the lotto, rob a bank...something...

I had the a7R for 2-3 months (can't remember now), AF with canon lenses was horrible, AF with native lenses wasn't stellar either, and always low shutter speed selection and shutter shock was horrible.
