This stumped me today. I was at Edward Tang's office (Cheetah Stands) and he asked me to change my white balance setting to 5200 Kelvin. Guess what? I didn't know how! I fixed the photo's in LR.

It's funny you say that. The other night I was out trying to shoot Astro and I got so cold that I couldn't think how to change to 4000K. I was in the WB settings but trying to change the custom 1,2 and 3 settings and couldn't. Eventually I realised it's not the custom ones you change. I blame the cold as I had done this previously but somehow forgot. The Sony menus are not obvious at times

it's been a while since I've done custom, but pretty sure it's a "K", then hit the arrow button to get to that number and change.

If i have no way to custom white balance using expodisc, i always use kelvin(K). It's the manual mode for white balance.

And one more right arrow goes to tint control.

I am a firm believer that the extreme cold causes you to forget things, or do things you would not normally do...I screwed the pooch on a great sunrise one morning because I forgot to focus anything...it was left in MF from the night before...everything was really soft and OOF...but it was less than 20 degrees on the coast and 25-30mph winds...it affects you...a lot.

^ Agree with that. I had similar experiences shooting in the cold. Your mind is in slow motion.

Perhaps you can enlighten me as to how it is done. I could not find a description in the owners manual. The 3 custom white balance settings all have AB for right and left and GM for up and down. Looks like the color temp is set at 5500K. It has to be easy, right?

That's where I fell foul. The 3 custom settings you refer to cannot be changed. It's the one above them that you change

Custom 1,2,3, I typically use with gray card.

Use "K" to dial in. Use D pad right instead of select, to adjust kelvin

had fun at a family affair tonight ,.,. but i'll be honest I was a bit disappointed in my sony cameras performance..last time I covered a big family event was with my canon cameras.. (5d3 and t4i)
AF was frustratingly slow.. and confirms focus , yet totally blurred out screens.. now I've seen vids on yuotube of people getting great shots at events , low lit evening events.. and so i'm hoping its just me..
anyway plenty of good shots for a family affair.. if this was a paid shoot.. id be worried about being sued.. lol

plenty of this all night long , very few sharp shots .. and goes from ok sharp to blurred out..

anyway I have heard plenty say for event traditional DSLR is still the way to go for quick and accurate.. i'm still convinced that I did some things wrong , even if my pair of sony's will never be as quick as my 5d3 t4i combo..

I have never shot so many OOF pictures with my t4i or 5d3 at a family event or any event for that matter

You really need to be shooting the a7ii or a7rii for events. Those have PDAF which is much better.

but I assumed the a6500 was supposed to be just as good as( or pretty close to ) a7rii?

I struggled with both a7sii and a65oo .. above shots are with a6500

jeezus thats disappointing, the a7s2 is a iso machine if it cant lock on in low light i dont know what can,i know my a7 isn't a good comparison but its crazy slow to focus, and also misses focus with the only native lens i have and more of course with adapted lenses, i always kept my canon 70d for times i wanted reliable and fast, my sony has its place but speed isn't its place haha,
