David A - completely off topic but my wife wants to buy a Prius and I am completely anti-electric cars (probably Due to ignorance) but as far as I remember you own one. What's your thoughts on it? Any issues-hassles with it or is it fine? Does it have enough oomph?

I don't know anyone else with one and just want to check she is not going down a bad road (excuse the pun).

We've only had ours since 2014, so we don't have a long-term maintenance experience yet, but so far it's the absolute perfect car for us.

I recall my first test drive having the sense that it didn't seem to have much power while in "Eco" mode, but we very quickly got accustomed to it and it felt normal to me within a week. Also, there is a "Power" mode, which burns more fuel, but has more than enough pep for passing other cars on a mountain incline. That said, we drive in eco mode 99.5% of the time because it's plenty.

One reason we bought ours is because my dad and his wife have had them for several years and they love them. But the most substantial reason we got one is because we were early-retiring and wanted to minimize our travel expenses (fuel costs). It couldn't be more perfect in that regard...seems like we can drive forever between fill-ups.

In my opinion, your wife isn't going down a bad road, she's going down the best road. That's just pure opinion, though, you might hate it. My wife and I have exceedingly happy with ours and can't imagine ever buying a standard car ever again. :)

BTW, today we're packing up the Prius for a 5-night camp trip starting tonight and we have enough room for all our gear plus our two yorkies. This will be just a preliminary camp trip out at West Point Lake, but getting ourselves ready for a whole lot of camping in the weeks and months ahead. In two weeks heading to Vogel State Park (NE Georgia), and two weeks after that camping at to Cloudland Canyon State Park (NW Georgia). Looking forward to some awesome scenery! Would love to break our personal record of most nights camped out this year (37), which we somehow managed to do while I was fully employed in 2007.

I'm not David either but I owned a Prius for over 7 and a half years and had zero problems with it. When I first bought the car, I was concerned with how it might perform going up a grade but with the electric motor, there was torque to spare and that car just keeps accelerating!! Mine was a 2004 and I averaged about 45 mpg. Most of my driving other than just around town to the grocery store was the 32 mile drive each way to my office and back. I drove that car from So. California to Pennsylvania to visit my sister a few years ago and took a side trip to No. Illinois on the way. I drove over 6 thousand miles on that trip without a hitch. When I traded the car in for the Cadillac, it had about 65,000 total miles on it.

Here's a shot of it one afternoon near Palm Springs while waiting for the full moon to rise.

Somehow that's just about the perfect shot of a Prius adjacent a line of windmills. :)

Thanks everyone, pretty resounding positive response. My wife only does 5k miles a year compared to my 20k but she is very eco conscious so I think this is probably what she will go for

Anyone try out the Timelapse app? I like that it supports silent shutter (wish SR would)...going to give it a try.

I've never even done a timelapse yet, but think it would be appropriate with my new emphasis/interest in video. Eventually might get a Syrp Genie Mini.

I keep meaning to give it a go as read good things about it on FM. I've only done one time lapse as I had done a star trail photo and realised I may as well do a time lapse too as I had the files.been meaning to do more as they are pretty cool

if you intend to keep it long term...start saving for the battery replacement...the big battery, not just the auxiliary one...can set you back about $3k or more depending on the car. My office manager has had to replace two batteries on their fleet of 5 Prius...Priuses...Prii...whatever...

Few from last weekend at the Haynes Museum for their monthly breakfast meet. First meet of the year I've actually been to so far so the season must now be upon us as we took the Escort to another one this morning :)
