Here's how much it would actually cost a pro to switch from Canon to Sony

What I can't figure out, is why Sony is so aggressively marketing the a9 as a sports camera. It makes a lot more sense to me as the ultimate wedding or photojournalism camera. I've seen virtually no mention of the camera being used for things other than sports or wildlife.

To be frank, Sony is probably not even close to winning over the professional and advanced amateur sports and wildlife crowd due to the lack of long glass that is even remotely affordable. I think they could win over other specialties though where their lenses stack up, and often beat, the competition. The small size is also a big advantage for everything BUT sports and wildlife.

yeah kinda agree there.. especially with wild life .. and the lack of long lenses .,. I mean I know they have the 100-400 but that just the basics for wildlife guys no? (i'm no wildlife shooter so that just my opinion)

also , speaking of wildlife ,, I haven't heard much in terms of weather sealing and anything added for durability in the harsher enviroments that shooting wildlife can often bring on .
or did I miss out on a video or article somewhere ?

thats the thing, this is not just a sports camera.

it can do everything... weddings would be perfect for this, with silent shutter, you won't get picked out from a church...

don't forget both extenders, with 2x you got 200-800 lens, and will still autofocus on a9

it's the chicken or the egg.

this can work fine as a second camera for serious sports/wildlife shooters. I cant imagine having only a 1dx when shooting a sports event, and having a uber long lens on the 1Dx or A99ii for that matter, paired with the A9 for shorter 70-200/100-400, you have a full kit.

Remember that even the A7rii had some action marketing, but obviously not as heavy. 100-400 is a step in the right direction, not sure if sony has what it takes to release big glass on the same day, but surely, it will come, if not here already via sigma mc-11....

sony typically releases 4-5 lenses a year, not counting batis or loxia, and the 100-400 is the third, so at this moment, it's a wait and see game. If not, I'm sure the 300/500 SSM will work fine on the A9. Wont give you 20, but 10 is a big start.

The A9 is overkill for weddings. You don’t need 20fps, for weddings.

I have 4 weddings in the fall and just sold $4k worth of gear, but that camera doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for me. It’d be one thing if this were priced like the a7rII or 5DIV, but the a9 is a really expensive camera and I’d be paying a premium for features I don’t need.

The 100-400 is great, especially with the ability to use TC's, but it doesn't solve the problem of long and fast glass. Pro's and advanced amateurs aren't going to care too much about that option.

I also think that Sony should have announced development of super telephoto primes (if they indeed are making them) to ensure people investing in the system that there is a future there.

Below 200mm the FE system is really solid in my opinion. They are missing a few niche lenses, but have most of the bases covered. All they really need is a 16-35 f/2.8 GM in the short term.

20 is ridic for sure, I'de never use it, however, you can slow down the shutter from what I read, kind of like how our A7rii have high and low continuous.

Don't discount the LA3 adapter and the long A Mount lenses available. I think that is what Sony is counting on but it will be a tough sell for established sports shooters to switch. New sports shooters may jump on it though.

........

No one said you had to run around shooting at 20fps. This whole "who needs 20fps" argument sounds a lot like the "who needs all that dynamic range" argument.

Oh yeah I have no issue with 20fps and of course I can turn the frame rate down..Just not going to pay a $1,500 premium for a feature I'm not going to use.

Isnt it prep for the Olympics next year or something?
