Here's some sample shots from the Yongnuo EF 100m F2

focusing is a tad slower than the Canon version, focusing is louder but I'd say it's 90% there. For 30% the cost of the Canon!

This weekend I will be borrowing a A6000 to see if focusing is better on that, I have the A7 original, which is not known for blistering autofocus.

Lens is available for pre-order on adorama or B&H, official release date is this Monday.

I would shell out another $3500'ish for an updated A7Riii that just incorporates the dual slots, joystick, better EVF (and the extra mode dial on the left would be neato too). I would shell out $4500'ish if they could achieve true global electronic shutter, so that silent shooting could be reliable under all lighting conditions including pulsing fluorescents / led's.

Regarding resolutions, honestly, I'd rather see them stay down in the 42-50MP range. 42MP is already more than I need, but it's very nice to have for crop-ability. Stepping down to 24MP would be hard. But 70MP is just too much for the kind of shooting I do. I shoot performances in much the same way a sports shooter might shoot a game. I take a couple thousand pics, then cull through and find the best 150 or so. It can be painful when comparing shots from a burst, trying to find that perfect one, waiting for the 1:1 to come into focus in Lightroom. Doing that with 70MP images would be excruciating.

My fear is that we may end up with nothing but extremes...
The a9 at 24MP.
The A7Riii (or A9R) at 70MP
The A7Siii (or A9S) in the 18MP range with 24fps RAW video,
...and nothing new in the lovely 42-50MP range.

42-50mp is the sweet spot for me too. Having that resolution on tap is useful for events because you know how it is...when things are moving quickly, you very often don't frame things perfectly in the field. I have a habit of shooting wide so I have head-room to crop, re-frame, and straighten later....and the ability to do-so without materially impacting IQ matters.

Yeah, many seem to be assuming that a9 will also have an R and S versions. But if Sony follows the CaNikon formula, the a9 will stand on it's own. There's no 1DXR or 1DXC, there's just the 1DX. However they go, I do hope some of the improvements will make their way to the R / S versions. Dual slots and the joystick, specifically

Cameras like the a9 and 1dxII are halo products, and the a9 is cheap for a halo product, but still priced at a level where its not going to move in volumes. Many of the a9's features will undoubtably make it to the a7 bodies, because Sony really needs an answer to the 5DIV to really take-on the wedding/event crowd, and you can't compete with the 5DIV with the a9 when you're charging a $1k premium.

Pre Carlo. I know a 70-200 is a must for wedding but do you think my 85mm and 24-70mm combo can do it? I can rent the 70-200F4 but i thinking maybe i don't have to.

What do you think?

Here is a simple technique to correcting white balance in an image. I use it for astrophotography but hadn't thought about using it for all my images. I first heard about this from Ian Norman from lonely speck but here Blake shares the technique.

i tried it and i think the curves trick is more accurate. it will give you neutral color and then tweak to your taste. what it does is it will automatically find the very blackpoint, whitepoint and the middle grey.

I tried that technique with a model with a blue lake and blue sky background. the resulting dominant color is yellow and blue, it's impossible to tweak yellow and blue.

I can't remember who shared that video here otherwise i will make my own version of it with a tweak.

Not much difference between 70mm and 85mm...you can crop to make up the difference.

So the question is whether or not you can shoot the whole wedding with a 24-70 Vinz. Depends on the venue and whatever limitations are in terms of how close you can get. I've shot some where the 70-200 never left my bag.

Edit I'm in the opposite position Vinz...I sold the 24-GM last week lol.

You can easily do an entire wedding with a 24-70 F2.8 - add an 85 1.4 on a high megapixel camera (reasonable cropping alone replicates 135mm) and you are then only missing specialty lenses (not 100% necessary - but macro, wide angle for scenic shots venue permitting, fast 28/35 or 50 for extreme low light receptions)

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

thanks i have a SEL 35mm F3.5 Macro lens than I can slap on my A6000 for the rings and other accessories stuff.

I would pop a little speedlight with gary fong collapsable diffuser on a dark reception with the help of the ISO to make it look natural.

I wish Sony will make a 24-120mm F4 for events. Nikon has it so it's possible. 70 is not long enough but thanks to the 42mp. It's like having a 24-200. who needs a high resolution images for reception pics, right. Only the Portraits needs to be high res.

Thanks Pre. I won't rent a 70-200 then.

It does not work with the cheap Fotga ones, which i think is the same as the andorer one? and whichever other company puts their name on those.

If the Commlite is compatible with the Canon EF 100mm F2 it should, work, if not you can always return it since adorama/B&H have fabulous return policies.
