I would shell out another $3500'ish for an updated A7Riii that just incorporates the dual slots, joystick, better EVF (and the extra mode dial on the left would be neato too). I would shell out $4500'ish if they could achieve true global electronic shutter, so that silent shooting could be reliable under all lighting conditions including pulsing fluorescents / led's.
Regarding resolutions, honestly, I'd rather see them stay down in the 42-50MP range. 42MP is already more than I need, but it's very nice to have for crop-ability. Stepping down to 24MP would be hard. But 70MP is just too much for the kind of shooting I do. I shoot performances in much the same way a sports shooter might shoot a game. I take a couple thousand pics, then cull through and find the best 150 or so. It can be painful when comparing shots from a burst, trying to find that perfect one, waiting for the 1:1 to come into focus in Lightroom. Doing that with 70MP images would be excruciating.
My fear is that we may end up with nothing but extremes...
The a9 at 24MP.
The A7Riii (or A9R) at 70MP
The A7Siii (or A9S) in the 18MP range with 24fps RAW video,
...and nothing new in the lovely 42-50MP range.
42-50mp is the sweet spot for me too. Having that resolution on tap is useful for events because you know how it is...when things are moving quickly, you very often don't frame things perfectly in the field. I have a habit of shooting wide so I have head-room to crop, re-frame, and straighten later....and the ability to do-so without materially impacting IQ matters.

Yeah, many seem to be assuming that a9 will also have an R and S versions. But if Sony follows the CaNikon formula, the a9 will stand on it's own. There's no 1DXR or 1DXC, there's just the 1DX. However they go, I do hope some of the improvements will make their way to the R / S versions. Dual slots and the joystick, specifically
Cameras like the a9 and 1dxII are halo products, and the a9 is cheap for a halo product, but still priced at a level where its not going to move in volumes. Many of the a9's features will undoubtably make it to the a7 bodies, because Sony really needs an answer to the 5DIV to really take-on the wedding/event crowd, and you can't compete with the 5DIV with the a9 when you're charging a $1k premium.
