I want to get a native portrait lens, but am torn between getting the Batis or the new FE 85. The GM is overkill for my needs. I've been watching the used prices for the Batis and I've seen them going for around $850-900. I'm questioning whether or not I would prefer the Batis in the long run.

Have any of you shot with both?

havent shot much, but did shoot it this weekend. Generally like it, much smaller than the 135L, my other portrait lens. makes it really hard to pick up other lenses when this is so good.

there was one little floaty flare ring on her arm that I had to clone out, but other than that...nothing. I have learned to use things to let me shoot like that but not directly into the sun...the playground equipment over her head was that "thing" this time.

Ah yeah. I think I meant to say that ghosting is well under control as the flare is very localized. I like the look backlit look of the sun in the background a lot....but usually indirect sunlight like you said. Direct sun without a reflector or strobe is too contrasty for even for Sony sensors hah.

^^^Ooooo...I can appreciate some swim shots. Talk about tough light conditions.Nearly every aquatic center I go into is horrible. I'm constantly struggling to find a balance between keeping quick enough SS's with lowest effective ISO. I'm envious of people who get to shoot outdoor meets.

I doubt I've shared this one. a6500 + E 50/1.8. My son Sam.

artificial light + skylights = whitebalance mess

I'll do 1/2000 ISO 6400 mostly. Slower works, but I like the freezing power of 1/2000

my kids are slow swimmers, even with years of experience, your son is much faster I can see

I wouldn't go that far. The FE85 is great, and comes very close to matching the Batis. But I love the pop that I get out of camera with the B85, which I don't see in the FE85. Also, if you do any video at all, or handheld shooting in low light, the OSS in the Batis is fantastic.

I agree. There is more to a lens than simple sharpness...how it draws is also a big deal for me. That specialness is what made me an instant lover of my Batis 85mm.

Before I sold my EF 70-200mm f/4L IS, I did some sharpness comparisons between it and the Batis 85mm. At first I was a bit dismayed to see very little resolution difference except on the edges of the frame. But, what really stood out to me was the rendering (and I think the Canon has a great rendering too). Aside from sharpness the Batis images just looked better.

This isn't to suggest the FE 85mm 1.8 doesn't have a great rendering - I haven't evaluated it - but when discussing lenses often sharpness is seen as the single defining quality one seeks in a lens (and I agree it's probably the most important one). Actually I can see myself slightly preferring the bokeh from the Sony...I'm not a huge fan of the Batis bokeh, although it's nice.

Speaking of bokeh, shooting my Batis wide open really really really makes me miss having the Otus 55mm. Best lens I've ever used or will ever use. The Otus has what I regard as perfect bokeh - very smooth, but beautifully well-defined.

Cool swimming shots guys. My nearly 4 year old son lost interest 2 months ago. He had been going for a few years consistently.

My 11 yo daughter flat out quit after 6 years of going at it hard. After the better part of a year off she's thinking it sounds fun again as summer approaches. We'll see. Swimming is a very good discipline to practice. I think once the skills are there they can come and go from the sport without much issue. I wish I would have learned like these kids when I was young!

We'll see how long this little guy stays interested! He's pretty competitive! ;-)a

the progression of really young kids is much different than older. have him get back in it a few years later, he might like it. I take my kids swimming so they can get exercise. My oldest started like at 3 or so, learning was really slow at that age, so I decided to let my girls start later around 5-6. At that age, they learned much faster naturally, and stayed interested. I guess it also helps that all 3 are the same level swimmers and they enjoy class together. They are 1 class behind the "swim team" class, but they are much slower than those kids ;-)a

The problem with us and swimming is that it was basically a summer only activity for us and my 8 year old would forget everything every year. He progressed really slowly over three years before I stopped bothering to enroll him.

my daughter has been in the pool since she was 10 months old...she still goes to swim lessons once a week and now at almost 6 I have no fear about her and a pool...she has been introduced to flippers...and swims like a dolphin now with those on...we can't get her out of the pool. I don't think I will try to put her onto a swim team, I had friends that did that as a kid, and they hated swim practice...and it made them not enjoy going to the pool for fun...while I love the pool for fun, always have and always will and want to keep it that way for my daughter.

I was out shooting at the bamboo forest in Prattville, Alabama early Sunday a.m. I setup with my A7R2/90mm 2.8 macro on this bamboo shoot with a dew drop hanging on for life. The rendering here is almost like the RAW file, just some tweaks on color and exposure. I shot this at different angles and distances but I’m beginning to like this more than the closeups. What do you think?
