I wouldn't go that far. The FE85 is great, and comes very close to matching the Batis. But I love the pop that I get out of camera with the B85, which I don't see in the FE85. Also, if you do any video at all, or handheld shooting in low light, the OSS in the Batis is fantastic.
I agree. There is more to a lens than simple sharpness...how it draws is also a big deal for me. That specialness is what made me an instant lover of my Batis 85mm.
Before I sold my EF 70-200mm f/4L IS, I did some sharpness comparisons between it and the Batis 85mm. At first I was a bit dismayed to see very little resolution difference except on the edges of the frame. But, what really stood out to me was the rendering (and I think the Canon has a great rendering too). Aside from sharpness the Batis images just looked better.
This isn't to suggest the FE 85mm 1.8 doesn't have a great rendering - I haven't evaluated it - but when discussing lenses often sharpness is seen as the single defining quality one seeks in a lens (and I agree it's probably the most important one). Actually I can see myself slightly preferring the bokeh from the Sony...I'm not a huge fan of the Batis bokeh, although it's nice.
Speaking of bokeh, shooting my Batis wide open really really really makes me miss having the Otus 55mm. Best lens I've ever used or will ever use. The Otus has what I regard as perfect bokeh - very smooth, but beautifully well-defined.
