I just checked a shot I took on my A7R. It was ISO 100, f/11, 121 Seconds and I dont see any hot pixels when pixel peeping the RAW file. Assuming also that the image is 12bit as it seems that this isnt a new implementation on the A7RII. If the A7RII produces images that are at least equal to this I will be happy enough. I do seem to remember not liking my nighttime photography shots on the A7R due to high ISO noise and hot pixels. Hopefully there is an improvement here with the RII.

What I do know for sure though is that within my 14 day return period I need to test out all of this stuff to make sure im entirely happy. I really hope I am as my mind is set on losing the 5DIII and having a smaller setup

Too soft and mushy for my tastes, but if you're happy with that LE result, then that is all that matters. :)

I will also note that a relatively well lit street scene is a different thing than a dimly lit LE landscape.

Well, it is on f16 on a 12MP body hehe. I am pretty happy with it, I mean I have printed A3 size ish prints from the A7s for wall mounting and 12MP is more than enough. The 35mm f2 IS USM is not so happy above F11 ish...so f16 it becomes a bit "smooshy".

So I've been on the fence about selling the FE 55 1.8, since I prefer the rendering of the FD 50 1.2L.

I wanted to reserve my judgement for the arrival of my a7rII, because I wanted to see how the 30 year old lenses resolves on a 42mp sensor, vs the modern FE 55.

I tested both at f1.8, since the FD 50L wins by default at F1.2 :-)

Here are the (surprising) results:

I was just taking another look at the raw files from my LE work with the a7S and need to call myself out for some user-error. I had correctly exposed for city lights, but that left the dimly lit areas way too underexposed. I should have also done other exposures for the dimly lit areas and merged them in Photoshop. Doesn't matter what camera is used, underexposing a dimly lit area is a recipe for crappy noise. So, my fault on that.

Anyway, let's just hope these a7R II LE reports end up being much ado about nothing. Right now I am only "concerned" with an eye on the lookout for more conclusive data.

Top one is FD? Looks warmer/richer, clearer, contrastier.

I did similar studies between my Otus 55mm and the FE 55mm and had a similar result: FE 55mm was cooler, less saturated, less sharp (in spite of it's moniker of "mini Otus"). But, the FE 55mm is still an awesome lens, though - I certainly loved what I got out of it while I had it.

Yeah the top is the FD.

The FE55 is a great lens no doubt, but I don't know...it never wowed me beyond its resolution. It seems similar to the Sigma primes....measures well on test charts, but never impressed me in terms of the more subjective characteristics of a lens (bokeh, colors, rendering overall).

Interesting that the 30 year old FD is able to keep up in terms of resolution, even on a 42mp sensor! I'm wondering how the FD85 1.2L will stack up against the Batis 85 1.8 when I finally get it.

Im seeing things differently than you guys. To me the lower shot looked warmer and had more contrast and that was before I realised what shot was taken with what lens. I really like the character of the FE 55 and the way it renders the out of focus areas. Below are two shots I love of my son, both taken on the A7R at f/1.8

Yeah its definitely subjective, so definitely not making claims that one is better than the other. What surprises me is that subjective stuff aside, the 30 year old FD lens is able to 'keep up' with the FE 55 in terms of pure resolution. MTF charts might tell a different story, but using the eyeball test at 100% crop puts the two very close together on a 42mp sensor. This is interesting, as the common belief is that modern high resolution sensors will outresolve older lenses.

Nice shots BTW!

Apologies in advance - this has absolutely nothing to do with a7 cameras - but if you haven't taken time out to watch the Squirrel photography video currently highlighted on Flickr, you need to do so. Just about the cutest funniest photography video I have ever watched. :-D
