Am I the only one who doesn't understand those whose biggest negative is that the a7rII not being able to AF Canon lenses as well as a Canon body? I mean it would be one thing if Sony promoted the fact that it could, but the ability to AF better than previous generations has more to do with better PDAF which impacts native glass, more so than marketing it directly to Canonglass.
I mean maybe I don't get it since I don't own a Canon glass. But the disappointment that It doesn't AF non-native glass as well as the native camera company seems odd and silly. We're we expecting this to AF better than a Canon to spell the demise of Canon? Is it just me?
Well Sony was promoting this feature by actually demonstrating Canon lenses on the a7rII at the announcement...so while it doesn't appear in any official marketing material, they were indirectly promoting this feature. But yes I think its unfair to admonish the a7rII because AF with some EF lenses (mostly older lenses) don't perform as well as a native Canon DSLR. This feature is more of a bonus than a core function, IMO...its a bone that Sony has thrown us. The camera performs well enough and offers enough to stand on its own even without the ability to AF adapted lenses.
For the record, I've spent a good amount of time adapting the 24-70II, 70-200 2.8II, and 50 1.8STM, and I'm finding that the AF is more than adequate enough to replace my 5DIII for my uses. I don't shoot sports or wildlife, nor do I own any super telephoto lenses, but its more than good enough to shoot portraits/weddings/events.

Well, I think it is because Sony glass is overpriced and just not as versatile as the Canon glass available. Once there is a proper affordable but decent line of full frame Sony glass, this would not be an issue any more.
Give it 4-5 years and maybe people will be buying Sony glass for their Sony cameras. The odd thing is how Sony just have not plain hacked/reverse-engineered the Canon lens firmware....or is this just plain illegal?
Technically metabones/viltrox/etc are the ones reverse engineering the AF signal. All sony did unlock the phase detect AF for non FE lenses. Technically this was to allow adapted A-mount lenses to use the phase detect sensors, but they opened the door for just about any lens to do that same.
