K one last set of a6500 test shots...this time with the siggy 24-35 f2

Firstly, I couldn't match the FOV between the a7rII and the a6500....probably because the lens is actually wider than 35mm on the long end. Everything is SOOC but I did do my typical event set-up...godox 860II gelled and flagged with a flashbender, and I used the expodisc to set the WB. The speedlight is slightly on the cool side but no big deal.

Test shots are below, but TBH at normal magnification (which is what I care about) the noise is so similar between the shots that its hardly worth thinking twice about. Basically you can bridge the noise gap between the a7rII and a6500 with a lens that is one stop faster......mathematically I knew this but I wanted to see it. But really the difference in noise at that one stop jump (in terms of sensor size or ISO) is pretty inconsequential for this type of scene.

One last thing...in low light the a6500 does a much better job with the adapted Sigma than the a7rII. Its acceptably good on the a6500 inside of the PDAF zone...probably because the PDAF system is a in the a6500 is a step better than the a7rII. Also once I knew to keep my focal point inside the PDAF zone I had less trouble focusing with the lens overall.

focuss assist is DSLR feature, none of ML cameras have AF assist in speedlights

from dpreview:
"That is true with all mirrorless cameras. and the flashes. Across brands. Olympus, Fuji, they all have the same issue across brands and always have. Basically their TTL flashes are designed only to work with normal phase autofocus detect method through mirror like on DSLRs. When using with a DSLR, the autoassist light works because DSLR use Phase Autofocusing. The auto assist light does not work with any camera using contrast focus method focusing. 100% on that. I've tried numerous other flashes from other brands and the result is always the same"

You don't really need a focus assist beam for contrast detect as contrast detect can see the ISO boosted image on the sensor to basically see in the dark.

If you don't really need a focus assist beam for contrast detect AF systems, then Hasselblad would not have put a massively bright lighthouse strong focus assist beam on their new mirrorless H1D which is apparently blinding people it is so bright - and yet the camera still has trouble locking on in many situations.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

and why Sony includes a focus assist on camera which cannot be seen anyway with GM lenses that are huge? sony is confusing.

focus assist has it's own issue, like stuck in single shot and slower to acquire focus.

Because Sony flashes work with a-mount DSLR's too.

No clue. Can't speak for hassy. All I can say is that if the lack of focus assist were an issue, there'd be no way I could photograph the dancefloor of a wedding reception and I wouldnt be happy with it the way I'm not happy with adapted lenses on the a7rII....but i have tons dancefloor photos and the lack of an AF assist be has honestly never registered as an issue.

i meant on the body of the mirrorless, with the A6000 and the A7RII(if i'm not wrong), there's a focus assist. The A7RII went for a service.

A friend in Roseville Ca is selling the all of the following for US2200K only. Might be a good backup. He's not using it that much. He's just a hobbyist because he's busy being a nurse.
