Thanks for your input..
my choice in lens was 16-35 f4 or 55 1.8

face detect and eye focus were not being very reliable.. it would pop up one minute then disappear the next and go OOF ..
and so that's why I kept 5.6 and higher at one point, so that I would have more in focus .. that was my logic maybe not the best one..

I know that both my a7sii and a6500 can produce excellent quality photos with lots of details..
The problem I seem to run into , and again -- User not camera.. when ever I have these high pressure type shoots be it events or portraits or whatever , everything seems to go wrong..
I cant seem to change AF quick enough ,
i find that if i use zone or wide face or eye detect work better.. i think..
but then sometimes i cant get what i want in focus

if i use spot , face and eye detect will detect but then switches to spot..

for this kind of high pressure (for me ) shooting , i miss my canon 5d3, for myself i felt it was easier to work with under pressure(i have pics of events from when i had it ,, and what a difference in quality .. again not cameras fault , but my current inability to use them quickly )

when i'm working at my own pace , and i have time to think about things , i can get the sony's to produce very good quality ..

I've been very disappointed in my pics of family events / affairs since i switched..
couldn't be happier in the video and cityscape photos area..

There is a reason a 24-70 F2.8 is the goto event for events. When I goto family events, I bring my A7Rii, I set it up in what I call Point and Shoot mode (1/125, F3.2, Auto ISO, Auto WB, Large Spot - with my Canon 24-70 F2.8 II). I do this because I really don't take any pictures myself, but I have a brother in law and his daughter that love to use the camera and just keep shooting. I have shown them how to move the Large Spot around the screen. I recognize that the A7Rii likely has much better AF than the A7Sii so maybe that is something to think about if photos are more your thing (it also takes great video). The above settings are not remotely perfect, and I would never shoot these exactly myself, but they manage to get lots of keepers from our family events.

A camera that doesn't focus lock quickly, exactly when you need it to, is useless in my opinion.

When I look at your gear, if it was me personally, I would swap it all for an A7Rii with a 24-70 F2.8 - I think you will much happier.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

I don't know if this is me just looking for an excuse for my mistakes..

but , could a better full frame have given me better results even at the same ISO?
8000 iso with a 12mp FF , or iso 8000 with twenty something mp with an apsc were my options..for this particular picture

I think in the end most pics will be usable .. especially as most will be viewed on a phone or tablet , but I still cant help wanting better

Finally got a chance to look at this on my computer. This one looks great, and REALLY clean for ISO 8,000. I mean there's some grain but really impressive at that ISO.

The other shots look underexposed and you might want to push the exposure in post. Of course this means you'll introduce some noise, but it looks like the files have some head-room to them.

The Macallan 10 Year Old Fine Oak Scotch whisky

I haven't tried this triple cask matured whisky yet but am looking forward to trying it tonight.

Love the warm tones. Left side is underexposed, but I'm not sure if you were going for symmetrical lighting or not.

Thanks, Carlo, I used a gold reflector on the left as I wanted it darker on one side in this case. The whole mood of the image is a bit dark so I don't consider that side as under exposed. I didn't want to blow out any highlights and when viewed large, 99% of the label is easily read.

I like that the "Fine Oak" is photographed in front of what might be some fine oak. ;)

Thanks, David. I thought about reversing things and have the bottle on the wood and a black background behind it. I'm kinda limited on what there is around the house to use as backgrounds at the moment. :-)

Played with the Sigma 135 f1.8 a bit this evening. So far so good.

Good comparison between the leading luminosity panels in Photoshop in case anyone is interested. I think I'm going to give TKActions v5 another look. Nick Page also did a similar comparison this week.

Anyone try this RAW viewer? It similar to PhotoMechanic for faster culling but it may be better. Culling in LR especially large Sony files is such a pain and a productivity killer.

I've been meaning to comment on this image....This takes "clean" to another level. Amazing work. Really, really nice image!
