I just don't have time for MF in a wedding - I was really hoping for a way to use the 85L with IBIS from F1.2 to F2 for handheld portraits - is there not anyway to put the focus spot on an eyeball with the Sony with the 85L - do I need to sell it and get a 85 Batis to do this?

many thanks

To be fair, getting critical focus down to the eyeball not he 85L is a total crapshoot with AF on a DSLR by the nature of the technology.

I sold my EF 85L and haven't had a chance to test the AF, but you do have the ability to designate an AF point that you can set on the eyes of your subject when using adapted lenses. The benefit to using a native FE lens, however, is that you get continuous eye focus and can do this:

OK, I figured it out. AF continuous with wide setting and face detection on, it will focus on the eye. And fast. Don't sell your 85 L II. Just keep in mind that it is through a mirror and getting my lashes under my baggy eyelids is next to impossible.

Awesome

Thank you

Mine arrives Tuesday so I will use these posts to get a head start

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

KayakPhoto- awesome osprey capture. A great lens. Sometimes I regret selling my some years ago. Might come in handy now with the R2 but I'm holding out on Sony producing a native e-mount 400mm F4 which would suit me better.

This is probably old hat to everyone...and totally off topic I suppose...but I just tested the free "Play Memories Mobile" app on my Galaxy s5 and the "Smart Remote Embedded" feature on the a7rII to control the camera by my smart phone. While it's very basic, what I liked...and just tested is that I can set the camera up next to my hummingbird feeder, aim it and switch to "movie" mode and go back in the house. There, while sitting at my desk, I can view the scene shown in live view on the cameras LCD on my phone's screen. If I see a hummingbird land for example, I could then press the "record" button and video the hummingbird as he is feeding. I'm sure there are lots of other uses but I thought this was pretty cool to view the camera's LCD on my phone and control the camera from this distance.

Here is a screenshot showing my feeder as seen through the camera using my FE 55 at f6.3...who needs a long lens? hah! :p

Very nice. Never occured to me to try movie mode on the A7II along with the app.
I do agree that's a nice mobile app. I use mine to transfer the day's photos to my iPad for quick viewing after coming home from a shoot (before bothering to go upstairs where my workstation is for processing).
The transfer over WiFi works very well and is seamless (unlike Canon's clunky EOS Remote app which seems to glitch a lot and lose the connection when trying to transfer stuff from my 6D).

Lovely. I do love the FD 24/2.8. A fantastic landscape prime on the A7 series.

Great capture! So, how's the 70-400G AF on the A7RII?

As I've stated before, my biggest hold-up with the Sony AF and adapted lenses is the fact that I want to be able to use my EF 100-400L with a fast (native-like) AF. Until then, I feel I still have to own a Canon body, even if it doesn't get used much.

Having said that. I captured this with said 100-400L and the A7II, using manual focusing.

Beautiful hummer. I too tried the 100-400ii on the Rii...like the 400DOii and the 300 2.8 IS II it is fast withing a certain focal plain, move out of it and it requires focus assist.....but then my 150-600mm Tamron needs some foc.assist from time to time to even after the firmware up date.

FAVOR from you focus pundits. Can you provide a concise step by step menu wise/button wise to get the continuous eye focus. I've been trying to read back through the posts but keep getting sidetracked. If you post it up I'll copy it and put it in my droid for safekeeping.

I agree. I've really enjoyed it and the "bang for your buck" is off the charts.

The shot with the Osprey was actually taken with the a7 using the LAEA4 adapter. I find the autofocus to work surprisingly well. You have a limited focusing area though compared to what you would get with the a7r II. The early reports seem to imply that the a7R II isn't playing very nice with the longer focal lengths though.

Thanks!

It would be nice if Sony would come out with a new 400mm f/4. The main problem is that it would probably not sell many copies, so they would price it very high. This would be similar to the situation of the pricing on their 500mm f/4.

Im seeing things differently than you guys. To me the lower shot looked warmer and had more contrast and that was before I realised what shot was taken with what lens. I really like the character of the FE 55 and the way it renders the out of focus areas. Below are two shots I love of my son, both taken on the A7R at f/1.8

I'm with you. Sharpness, contrast and saturation can be done in post. i need AF for my family portrait gigs, especially small kids. the FE/55 + the Batis 85 will be my ultimate portrait lens in th enear future.
