Yes, the x can appear. That's why I referenced I can get about 5 stops of variance with the 18mm. But, in conjunction with SR app it's quite powerful.
You definitely have to take care and note the limitations. What I do is know the focal length limit in advance and count off the stops as I dial in the variance.

I've been using the bombo holder, and I think that may be it for me. The super slick size and quickness of holder style may seal the deal. I no longer need a dedicated filter bag, it's so small, it fits the small front pocket of my holster bag.
