Thanks guys. And yes I think you're right David. I've been trying to rationalize not buying it but it really is the best tool that currently offers for the job.

In other news....Sony Pro Services comes through again. The email came super late but I requested this yesterday...apparently I should have an a9 to test today

Absolutely. A behind-the-lens variable ND is the ideal solution. Unfortunately it's not a practical physically-possible solution.

Yes, the x can appear. That's why I referenced I can get about 5 stops of variance with the 18mm. But, in conjunction with SR app it's quite powerful.

You definitely have to take care and note the limitations. What I do is know the focal length limit in advance and count off the stops as I dial in the variance.

Thanks, assumed it was all the time. I used it once and had the issue and put it away.

I've been using the bombo holder, and I think that may be it for me. The super slick size and quickness of holder style may seal the deal. I no longer need a dedicated filter bag, it's so small, it fits the small front pocket of my holster bag.

Yep basically gives the same setting as the a6300/6500. Im very happy about this upgrade. What a weird time we are now in - Sony getting their act together with pro support and repairs and now giving firmware updates to fix actual user issues! Who would have thought

I have done the firmware update...I really dig that new focus point control...when working around kids, that will be so much more usable...and faster...I have in the past been frustrated by the function of defining the focus point..that little update takes care of that 10 fold...and this weekend I hope to test out the new non star eater side...off to the mountains in the morning!

Do these X's with variable ND's affect video?

I've been wanting to get a variable ND to keep my aperture down while shooting video.

Only in the sky at certain strengths(apparently) and wide angle lenses. Don't think it was an issue at longer focal lengths, similar to a polarizer

It affects video and photo. But, it's merely a know-what-you're doing thing. I'd guess that more videographers than photographers use them.

I recommend the Tiffen to you...you'll quickly learn to work around the limitations. It's principally no different than using your knowledge of how slow your shutter can be before getting blurry shots.

Cool thanks David/Charlie!

I haven't been doing much video but intend to. One thing that stood out to me when I shot that video in Disney is how small of an aperture I had to use to stay stick with the double the frame rate rule because it was so bright out.

Speaking of video plans I've changed mine and have decided sell my super-cool Zhiyun Crane and focus only on new lenses and stills photography.

worse with slog where you have to stay with 800 or 1600 iso ..

nd filters are a must for video.. I've been looking into a vari myself .. I have nd 's but not vari..

Dang, busy thread today. I was busy driving 9 hours to NW Arkansas. I'm looking forward to upgrading firmware when I return.

Congrats Carlo on the a9!

Tested by RII+85GM yesterday. Good as new. I thought the built-in mic on the Rii is decent.
