Yeah I can't speak for the other adapted lenses as the AF performance on the a7rII seems to vary from lens to lens....but the 24-70II and 70-200II work really well on the a7rII. These are the two bread and butter event lenses, and the AF is good enough that I can finally part with my 5DIII.

Can you at the speed required at an event put the focus point exactly where you want it with this camera and these two lenses - not sort of in the right spot but exactly. If you can then the camera will work - if you can't then you are going to have to be shooting F4+ and that will not work for me either from an ISO perspective or from a desired DoF.

Mine arrives tomorrow so I appreciate the work done by those ahead on me in terms of exactly what focus mode and technique is used with these 2 lenses as they are my gotos as well.

Many thanks for any and all work being done.

Is it Contunous Focus with wide and face recognition ?

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

And I vouch for 16-35 f/4L IS. Sony has a comparable offering and I have one on order to compare - it boils down to preference and how one assembles the gear for a shoot (would one carry an adapter just for this lens while the rest is an FE or if it's one of the Canon lenses to be used with A7 series). 70-300L is also very good in daylight - given it's not a fast lens to begin with and its focal length renders itself more as an outdoor lens, its AF performance with A7RII should be adequate for most occasions.

24-70II is a keeper for sure given the Sony's native FE offering leaves a lot to be desired.

By the way, has anyone tested 70-200 f/4L IS? It's an excellent lens that debuted right at the AF eligibility cusp in 2006, and Sony has the FE version of this.

17-40L is solid as well. Good performance all around.

I'd love to find out about the 70-200 f4 IS as well. One of my favorites, I almost picked it up instead of the 70-300L, but wanted the extra 100mm reach more than the 'speed'.

70-200mm Canon f4 L IS works well with the phase detection AF on the R2.

I find the low light capabilities of the 7S to be enough that it will be my street camera, especially in the evening or inside with any of the CV Nokton lenses. At this point, my Canon cameras will most likely stay home when I travel--this will be a first for me. Next up is a regimental reunion in D.C. and I will test the difference between the Zeiss 21mm f2.8 ZE and the CV 21mm f1.8 with the RII for group photos. My fastest SWA zoom with AF is the Canon 16-35mm f2.8, so it will get a test on the RII as well. Then Paris in the fall and possibly some other travel in Europe--I plan to bring the 7S, 7II and 7RII with just three lenses: Sigma 12-24mm DG II, CV 40mm Nokton S.C. and Sony 24-240mm FE OSS. As an old news shooter I have no problem hanging one from each shoulder and one around the neck. I had hoped that I wouldn't need a battery grip, but the R2 is so hungry for juice that it will be necessary to mount the grip.

If you’re talking precision/accuracy, that’s not the weakness, as the AF system is nailing shots better than my DSLR’s ever could. DSLR PDAF to me has always been the system where AF is ‘sort of in the right spot but not exactly’, as its always been frustratingly inaccurate (we’ve simply grown accustomed to accepting some variance at the critical focus level).

The one weakness I find is that it will struggle to find the capture the initial lock if the lens is extremely defocused. Not really an issue with the 24-70, but it does occur with the 70-200 if say the lens is starting from the minimum focus distance and trying to acquire focus on an object that’s 50 feet away. In those cases its best to quickly turn the ring to pre-focus so the camera isn’t trying to find a subject within a big wall of bokeh. I wouldn’t recommend it for sports, but this is less of an issue for events, as you aren’t typically focusing back and forth on objects that are very far away from one another. To be fair, this is an issue with DSLR’s as well…to a lesser extent than the a7rII, but pre-focusing telephoto lenses is a habit I picked up from shooting events on a DSLR.

As you can see from this video, it’s a non-issue when focusing on subjects that inside of 30 feet or so from one another:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOCwCF1mNXc (external link)

In terms of AF mode, I'm primarily using single shot af (AF-S) with selectable point - medium. selectable point - small has a greater degree of precision, but its almost too precise as the actual AF area is actually limited to a single phase detect point in the middle of the af area....OSPDAF points are much smaller than DSLR PDAF points, and if you don't have enough contrast or complex enough patterns within that little point, it will fail to lock. selectable point medium will use a small array of points to AF, leading to less chances for the AF to fail, while still being at least as precise as my 5DIII.

Excellent Vinz. I'm not normally a fan of cross processing but in this case, the peach/teal tones work very well.

I had a chance to try out using the Play Memories Mobile remote control app this morning. I used the FE 55mm lens to cover all the "flowerettes". The feeder is in a great spot for the hummingbirds but not so much to video. The feeder is in the shade and one of the few angles I have for setting up the camera on it's tripod causes the feeder to be strongly backlit. Because of this, I used an Ev of +1.3.

The app works great and of course, there is a delay between the events and the reception of it but so far, it hasn't been an issue. Maybe next time I'll try a telephoto such as my Canon 70-200 f4 and see how much detail I can get filming at 4K. I may also try 720p at 120fps and try some slow motion.

For some reason, viewing my 2160p video through IE only goes up to 720p. I need to see if I can figure out why so I can resolve this. The clip can be viewed in full 4K using Chrome as your browzer.

Looks good Gene. Watching it at 2160p on my work monitor. Waiting for IT police to come get me for blowing up company bandwidth :-)

Thanks. I was visiting my neighbor and showing him how this works when another hummer came to the feeder. I was surprised to still be connected at that distance and to be able to start recording from there.
