I'm looking forward to seeing your video. I wish I had better light for my set up and I'd like to try some slo-mo of the hummers as well.

I visited my next door neighbor today and was able to stay connected to the camera and could control it even from there.

How do you do slo-mo with the Sony? Is there some kinda in-camera or in-app mode? Or you talking about doing it in post?

In post. You shoot 720p at 120fps and reduce it to .25 for example which gives you a clip 4 times longer at 30fps

Here's a test doing slow motion on the hummingbirds. The original 120fps was reduced twice. The blurring is due more to him flying out of the field of focus than motion blur. I use Vegas Pro for these edits.

This is a work in progress basically using the trial and error method.

Thank you!

Taking a break in between working on the house repairs to mess with old pictures. This was a PP experiment: Single capture with multiple virtual copies each with a 1 EV space between the copies (AEB after the fact) processed in Photomatix and finished in Photoshop. Just having a little fun mainly. :D

Super cool Gene...had to watch that a few times - the last part anyway. Love the take off - they look cute with their little legs swinging around in flight. Great use of slo-mo!

Continuing my experiments with video tonight. Question for you Gene. How are you focusing the videos? Manual pre-focused, I'm guessing?
As far as you've found, is there a way to use continuous AF, with tracking across the frame, in video mode? ie, have the AF adjust once it locks on on the hummingbird and follows him around?
That would be awesome (and only on a native lens, I assume), but I could not for the life of me figure out the Sony AF/video menus and settings with the FE 24/70 on.
Once I was in video mode, it would not let me adjust aperture (this operation is not valid), or change AF modes or select AF points.

Focus mode, just as you thought, was manual mode so it wouldn't hunt accidentally. In order for the remote app to work with my smart phone, the mode dial has to be turned to "movie" mode. There aperture and shutter are set automatically and you have no control. The app does let you adjust the Ev + or -

I haven't played with video using aperture priority or shutter priority mode enough but I believe before any tracking can begin, the target object has to be focused on first, just like the Canon servo AF works.

I am always amazed at how colorful shots from the A6000 are.

Gene. Yeah. That's what I was referring to. Using the app, I had no control over focus.

In any case, my first attempt ended up being a failure, due to the focus being off. (He didn't land where I expected him to be).

Here's the video regardless. Flickr didn't let me embed the video as a whole.

Let's try youtube...

It's too bad about the focus being off but it's still an interesting video. I hope you get a chance to try it again. Out of curiousity, what program do you use to edit your videos? If you own Photoshop, did you know you can edit your videos there? That way, you're using filters, effects, etc. that you're already familiar with.

Here's a video from Phlearn about editing video in PS.

I will try it again. He likes that perch and comes back to it to survey his domain every evening.

I don't use anything to edit because this is probably my 2nd or 3rd video ever. haha.
This was straight out of LR after importing from the camera.

As my videos get more interesting, I'll look at editing. But for now, I'm happy to get something in focus.

For the record, the above was MF'd manually (and poorly, obviously) from the Canon FD 135/2. I believe I had the aperture at about 5.6. I'll have to try this again with a smaller aperture to get more DOF to account for the uncertainty of where the hummer's going to land exactly.
