it certainly fun for macro. for a paid gig portrait, i would go outdoor and make sure the background is really far. If the location is really nice like an awesome white beach, i personally don't like melting the background away. It doesn't make sense going into that place then if you'll just throw it away with a creamy bokeh. my preference.
but you're right with "loosely random frame shots with distracting background, it's not a background eraser like the 135mm or the 200mm.
Well for environmental portraits where I want to pull the background into the frame, I'll reach for a 50 or 35...so it falls into the category of not wide enough either.
I dunno...the lens is kind of awkward for portraits for me. Personal preference though!
It is a very good 'casual' medium telephoto though. The macro ability gives you a lot of flexibility in terms of working distance. 85mm lenses are usually a pain to work with outside of controlled portrait shooting, since the minimum focus distance is pretty far.
