Well, I can understand that people prefer the FE 90mm F/2.8 Macro G OSS over the Batis 1.8/85 because it has macro capabilities and a shorter MFD. But I don't get the argument "it is sharper" since I haven't seen any proof of that. To me, the strongest point of the FE 90mm F/2.8 Macro G OSS is the macro feature and its secondary function (not its strongest point) is that it can act as a portrait lens. Even if people don't care about the bokeh, the difference is still 1 stop and 1/3 which is a lot. While ISO400 may not be noisy at all, I would still prefer ISO160 over ISO400 if I could live with the limited DOF that F/1.8 brings with it. And then there's also the Zeiss rendering. So as a portrait lens, the Batis 1.8/85 is the clear winner to me.

Remember that you went for the A7II at first and finally ended up with the A7RII? Save yourself some trouble and stick to the original plan (read: get the Batis 1.8/85). :p

Sharpness is probably last on the list of priorities when it comes to evaluating a portrait lens. It's important to a point, but flattering rendering of skin tones is probably the most important criteria. In this regard, the FE 90mm actually does surprisingly well and is reminiscent of the way Canon L primes render (which is a good thing). This is also the area where I was never fully happy with the Sigma ART primes as portrait lenses, regardless of how utterly sharp the 35A and 50A are.

The bigger consideration is f1.8 vs f2.8, for creative purposes. For the controlled portrait shooting you'd typically be doing with a medium telephoto, very rarely will you be put in such low light that 1 1/3 stop of light gathering will make or break a shot, so its more of a stylistic preference than anything.

So it comes down to MFD flexibility vs aperture flexibility. If stylistically f2.8 is a large enough aperture, then its worth considering the FE90 for the ability to move closer and add some macro capability to your kit. (detail shots for weddings/events)

I have a few more days with the FE90 and am still high on the pre-order list for the batis. I'm undecided at this point, but the FE90mm is a lot of fun

Have you even been able to compare the 35/2.8 to the 28/2 or did you never own these? Just curious.

I may be wrong, but I doubt anyone here has had both. Anyone happy with the 35mm won't need the 28mm and vice versa.

I have tried the 35mm twice, but struggled to like it (it's good, but boring with one major asset: diminutive size). The 28mm is tempting on price and being a stop faster, but the distortion would likely annoy me too much. But, maybe not - the FE 24-70mm distortion is bad too and it didn't worry me.

Can you use a vari-ND on an UWA lens (Voigt 15mm in particular)? or does it lead to uneven application of the effect?

I tried to film the alps as I passed over then in the plane so had the variND on a 35mm f2 (proper sized for the lens...no step up/down) and had a kind of rainbowing effect on the edges...maybe at extreme angles, you get diffraction like you do with chromatic ab.

Without getting hands-on, there may be a couple of possibilities. As a patent example, they may have built only what they wanted to patent, such as the locking system for the cylinder. Or there may be a folding trigger or a simple pressure release at the base where a trigger would normally be.

I would vote uneven. I used a variND on a 24-70 and it produced uneven results.

Since I really hate the kitlens on my a7ii, I am going for prime only. The 55/1.8 seems amazing but I wonder if it would be something I need since I have and love the 50/1.8 on my d750 (and also have the sel50). How would the 16-35 compare to the 28/35 primes? Got a nice second hand offer for that so I am choosing between the zoom or the prime. The 55 will be added later.

'definitely sharper than with my 5DIII' do you believe in 'sensor' resolution? I do !! I've seen an el cheapo lens suddenly look much more expensive when coupled to the Rii.

I certainly believe in that too. I noticed that even on my A7R!

I pulled the shadows up a good bit on this, even at ISO2000 it didn't degrade the image at as far as I could tell.

50L is a go
70-300L is questionable.

not having an A7rii is causing accelerated balding and restless nights on my part. It really sucks waiting for it.

At least this week, I may have some toys to play with, have the minolta beercan and will get to play with the 70-200F4 G lens soon.

may also reacquire the FD135 (or borrow for a really long time :p from my lensrental buddy)

I'm interested in what you think of the 70-200F4 compared to the Canon equiv.
Didn't know you'd already had the FD 135 at one point. By far my favorite FD lens on the A7II. I love that thing.

So, has your buddy not gotten an A7RII yet? I thought for sure by now one of your connections who have everything (your brother, or the other guy) would have had one! hehehe

I'd say I too suffer from accelerated balding, but sadly, that ship has sailed a long time ago (those who've met me or seen a pic of me will get the joke).
I'm losing sleep (well, ok, i'm exaggerating a bit) over what my path going forward is. I'm still hanging on to my 6D for fast AF situations and my A7II for landscapes and MF...but I'd really like to move forward with one or both of those towards something with more resolution at the end of the day.

Sony A7RII and a bunch of lenses.
