Yup yup. Have you tried the FE 16-35?

I haven't. But with regards to the FE, based on the size, price, and reviews of the lens, I'd lean more towards the Canon version now that it AF's with the a7rII well. I like the stuff you've taken with this combo.

this thread moves at an insane pace, so I'll just have to skip what I missed and start here. The 16-35F4 is fairly large compared to the FE 16-35. I would emphasize more on filter size at that point.

if I ever shot a 16-35, I'de be looking at filter sizes first, if size is not an issue, go with the canon. A known good lens and inexpensive.

Yeah I'm more concerned with length than girth (that's what she said?)

The other cheap-ish alternative is to pick up the 28 f2 along with the 21mm wide angle converter. The wide angle seems to be pretty good optically once you stop it down (as you typically would anyway for a landscape)

Just got a shipping notification on the Batis 85 from BH. Overnighted it, so I should have it tomorrow.

I think I'm going to stick with AF lenses for now. FD primes are very good optically even by today's standards and have a lot of character, but AF with the a7rII is so good in terms of speed and accuracy (particularly eye AF) that I hesitate to use MF lenses. Very nice to move through a shoot very fluidly without having to think about the focus....even nicer to have such a high percentage of keepers when I start to process the photos.

I had gotten very proficient with MF since it was my only choice back when I primarily had EF lenses and the original a7r, so this is somewhat unexpected lol.

Looking forward to seeing shots taken with your new Batis 85...congrats on it finally being shipped.

Looking very sauve Gene. The 90mm really is impressive, superb detail in all your shots with it

Thanks!

I'm interested in seeing how it stacks up against the 90mm macro I had the pleasure of shooting with for a while.

Yeah. I think I'm going to keep the Canon EF 16-35/4 IS myself. It's a better value than the FE version, and I suspect it's optically a bit better.
I'm willing to compromise on size (it's not really that big of a deal, for me). I also already have the 77mm filters covered.
In fact, invested in a bunch of step up rings so I can use my 77m filters on the 24-70 (67mm) and a number of other lenses.

Some good stuff in the past few days. Where you been? :)

Also in light of the fires up north, i ended up scrapping my plans for the Yosemite road trip and booked us a trip to Vancouver next week. We'll be spending 4 days in and around Vancouver. So now I have to revise my kit for that trip (air travel, vs. road trip).

Anyone here have any suggestions of good spots to hit up in VAN? (Photographic, Culinary or otherwise). I've never been.

[QUOTE=Puckman;17710724]How'd you find that Rok 35? It's been on my radar.

It's awesome. Great build quality. Focus ring is smooth and tight. It's a big heavy lens though. With hood it's quite long. Mine is a Canon mount so I need a adapter. Dof at 1 .4 is razor thin. I got mine on sale on amazon and for the price I couldn't be happier. I love the focal length. I use it on the Sony a7 and em5 and it's sharp on both. It's a great lens.

What do you folks recommend for a decent FD to E adaptor?

I just got my Novoflex one and I'm quite happy with it. Very snug and fits well. Some hit and miss reviews of the Fotodiox made me just spend about $20 more for the Novoflex.

I've got sick kids and an upcoming test. Been shooting locally as well (event photography).

If you like Indian food, one of the very best I've experienced is Vij's on West 11th in Vancouver. They don't take reservations, and you want to get in line at least 30-45 minutes before they open. Their wine marinated lamb popsicles in fenugreek cream are amazing.

If you're into plants the Van Dusen Botanical garden is nice, but we still prefer the Butchart Gardens over in Victoria.

If you're into bridge shots, get up into Stanley Park on the south end of the Lions Gate suspension bridge. There's also a great shoreline walking.bike path around the park.

I am curious if you have any tutorials/suggestions for skin softening Vinz? I hate it when the softening is too obvious and your photos seem to find a good balance between detail and softness.

Street photography question.

Would you go with 28mm or 35mm and why?

I'm thinking that one of these focal lengths might be my next buy.

I wish I could advise. My driveway is a mile and a half of gravel and the nearest neighbor 30 mins away. Street photography at its closest is Asheville an hour and a half away.
