Charlie. Yeah. Stitching is a pain in the ass. I don't see any reason to stitch. Not when I have 42MP to play with. I can crop 50% of the photo and STILL have more rez than my 6D. LOL.

I'm still feeling kind of uncertain about my kit. If money was no object, I would follow the model of having one Canon kit and one Sony kit with native lenses on both. I like the Sony for its resolution and the size of its lenses (even the FE lenses are a bit smaller than their Canon equiv.)
But there are still things about the Sony world that make it a bit awkward, so I do find myself thinking I'd be happy with a Canon 5DS of some sort.

Still need to go through the 1000 or so pics from my trip to Vancouver. I ended up using the Sony for 95% of those shots and the 6D a couple of times when I wanted AF with the 100-400L. All in all, I hurt my back carrying all this gear and the take away for me is that for travel, I need to be a lot more selective about what I take with me. I thought I was being selective and only took zooms this time (no primes). But that ended up working against me as my zooms are mostly heavy (100-400, 70-200, etc). I might have been better off taking the set of FD primes...

Why not? The 5DSR has also a thicker sensor glass doesnt it? Or does no antialiasing sensor mean that there is absolutely nothing in front of the sensor? Its still a mirror in between lens and sensor and a mirror or an adapter might cause problems to complex wide angle lenses. I would not exclude this as a possible reason.

But yeah, following the model of two kits makes absolutely sense.

It makes no sense for Canon to design and release a brand new lens (11-24) around the same time as their brand new high-end bodies that are meant to be used with said lens (5DS and 5DS R) and then to claim that this lens was not designed with that camera in mind. I find that hard to believe.

Im talking about the lens beeing specifically designed for the 5DS and 5DSR.

David said he liked it on the 5DSR and not so much on the A7Rii right? Or did it also disappoint on the A7Rii?

I notice that the 11-24 has quite a bit of focus breathing. I dont really know if that affects sharpness, but just something to think about. I compared my brother's copy to my rok 14, but only @ 36mp. It seemed really good with long distance shots, I avoided close up shots to rule out field curvature or focus errors.

The photozone numbers show that at 11mm, that is where the worst performance is. That's also the only focal length that I noticed the focus breathing, and that may be a possible explanation. To shoot the test chart for imatest, you gotta be really close to the target right? I'm not really sure how imatest is performed.

I just edited those shots. Firsts with FE16-35 second with the FE90.

I really like what I see from the 16-35 now. The shot is extremely sharp and the 90 also didnt dissapoint.

This pair of Swallowtail butterflies could only be best described as a couple. Between flitting between flowers, sipping nector or flying off for awhile, they were never more than a few inches apart.

Out of a half dozen attempts or so, this was about the best I could come up with because they were so hard to focus on.

Got some glass for the Sony in today, unfortunately none of the adapters haha.

First is a Sigma 24mm 2.8 filtermatic, with built in BW filters.

The build quality and focus ring are insane. Haven't held a lens this well built since I got to hold some Cinema 15-25k lenses. The focus ring literally feels like someone melted a stick of butter underneath it. So smooth.


The middle lens is Helios 44-2(a Russian clone of the Zeiss Jena Biotar 58mm 2.0), managed to find a US import version that just has FT markings.

Lastly is a newer Vivitar 85mm 1.8 Aspherical. It's Vivitar's departure from just rehousing Samyang glass so we'll see how it goes. Unfortunately the person selling it mistakingly listed it as Canon mount when it was Nikon. So now need to get an adapter for that also.

The MFD is listed at 0.85, which sounds like a lot of fun.

Im still here just not posting...... Mine is Italian btw ...... went for the cooking wife. She aint bad to look at either

Pretty sure that "Series 1" Vivitar is just a re-branded Opteka, but I could be wrong. That Sigma 24mm is really interesting though, can you share any more info on it?

The sigma couldn't really find much info on it, it's in Minolta MD mount. I was actually looking for another one of their 24mm since they all have good reviews when I spotted this one. It has a wheel to switch between a UV filter, red, green or Orange for black and white .

Their other 24mm(s) from the era have good reviews so I'm hoping this will too. Hoping to shoot some astro stuff with it. I have a friend who's a Minolta freak and he had never seen or heard about it before.

Adapter should be here tomorrow for that lens!

Awesome. I love those old lenses with all the cool little features like that, my dad's Nikkor 16mm f3.5 fisheye has built in color filters too, though I never use them. I especially love lenses with built in hoods, I'm kinda peeved that those aren't around in modern lenses, it makes things so convenient!

Your friend is right to be a Minolta freak, they make some awesome lenses! Here's a bit of evidence, also some good evidence of DR being useful (though I still say the Sony advantage here is overblown... flamesuit on )

I'm starting to want to get away from those overly done HDR type shots (working from one shot, bringing up the shadows +100 and lowering the highlights -100 or therabouts). Looks too unnatural to me. I used to start with that as a starting point for a lot of landscapes and fine tune from there. Doing it less and less nowadays.
Point being, that's one area where the Sony DR comes in handy, but in a way, since I want more natural looking photos anyway, the DR advantage becomes less important in my mind and I always found the DR from the 6D to be perfectly adequate.

That's what I meant. For that last shot I pushed the shadows by about +70 or so, but I wouldn't go much further than that because the image would just look flat. I could raise the shadows from my 6D just as high without issue... so IMO the advantage (most of the time) isn't that big of a deal with the Sony sensors in terms of DR.
