On an unrelated note, I am going through my pics from the Vancouver trip and not all too happy about things. Not a whole lot of keepers.
Nothing technical, mind you. The issue is me. My "eye" for photography is not a natural talent. It's always been something I have to work at (composition, etc) which means I'm at my best when I have time and patience and think things through.
Not so much on a whirlwind vacation trip. I apparently ended up snapping 1000 or so pics in "snapshot" mode (for the most part). 2-3 or more of the same exact scene where I happened to be standing, looking at something, before moving on a few steps only to snap a few more. It's rather depressing looking through 1000 snapshots of bad composition and mid-day light...bleh.
Time to take a step back from the gear madness and focus on the content a bit more...

Sony A7RII and a bunch of lenses.

I think the FE90 at f2.8 is really good for portrait.

Does anyone else find that the battery drains more than it really should when the camera is left off for a few days? I'm talking 20-30%. I'm using an A7 btw.

Really digging the first shot David

Thanks a lot! I dont know, but somehow all my landscape and cityscape stuff looks always so dramatically gloomy. Its not the style im looking for but this is how most of my stuff ends up. Maybe because i live in switzerland, where the weather is always grey :p

I'm starting to want to get away from those overly done HDR type shots (working from one shot, bringing up the shadows +100 and lowering the highlights -100 or therabouts). Looks too unnatural to me. I used to start with that as a starting point for a lot of landscapes and fine tune from there. Doing it less and less nowadays.
Point being, that's one area where the Sony DR comes in handy, but in a way, since I want more natural looking photos anyway, the DR advantage becomes less important in my mind and I always found the DR from the 6D to be perfectly adequate.

I started doing this one or two weeks back since when i watched a LR tutorial, and he did really just minor adjustments to get to a stunning result. He also makes a lot of use of the brush and the masking tools to apply only a hint of adjustments on certain areas. Since then, i only now realize how much i raped the clarity slider lol. Im getting far better results now, with only slight adjustments. i also had to learn that it isnt bad in a landscape shot when the foreground is dark. Im still anal about blown out skys, thought :)

I dont know where i read about this but however, i can confirm the following:

When i have my native lenses (FE16-35 or FE90) mounted to either my A7S or A7R, the battery drains down, even to full empty when i leave the cameras aside for like 2 or 3 weeks. Something that doesnt happen with my manual lenses mounted. Ive read that it has to do with the OSS beeing still working on the lenses which is awkward when the camera isnt in use. But i can confirm it happens with my FE lenses and not with my manual glass. Im not sure if it drains the battery the same way with adapted AF/IS lenses...

I find it very cumbersome to always dismount the lens... Can someone confirm if this happens on the A7Rii also?

How annoying! I am glad however that I am not the only one experiencing this. I can leave my Canon M for months and it'd still have a near full charge!

Edit: Saying that, it happens when I have the FE 28 on, and that doesn't have OSS...

Maybe it is just the electronic coupling. I remember reading something about the lens not shutting down in functions when still attached. Very strange indeed. I have my 70-300L mounted on the A7S since a few days, gonna check this evening how the battery got affected.

Still wondering if the A7Rii also has this issue

I'm surprised Sony haven't fixed it in a firmware update - it seems like an obvious problem that should be happening.

Im not too surprised as most of the people are complaining about lossy raw instead of more serious problems like this...

I suspect that there is something that allows to the camera to boot more quickly, that runs constantly in the background even when the camera is turned off, and that this process has a low level draw on the battery. Something akin to the instant on mode on the xbox one, which got slammed for a constant low power draw when the unit was turned off.

The boot-up time of the a7r when it first launch was horridly slow…this was fixed via firmware eventually, probably by implementing this power sucking feature. If you take the battery out of the camera, the camera takes a few seconds longer to turn on the viewfinder, read the aperture, etc etc when you turn it back on.

Not an engineer, so just a hunch.
