14 bit uncompressed raw has finally been officially announced. Will be terrific to get that monkey off the back of the a7 platform: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com …id-october-for-the-a7rii/ (external link) Should be seeing the update in a couple weeks it appears.

Really nice timing as today is my last day as a professional interior designer; starting at 5 PM CST I officially become full-time freelance photographer. So excited! :D

I am looking forward to the uncompressed raw for a couple reasons: a. absolute no-compromises image quality, b. interested to see how large the resulting file is after conversion to DNG format upon LR import.

Will there be a compression (lossless) of sorts with the conversion to DNG or will the file stay the same size? If it gets considerably smaller, then I may shoot uncompressed by default, as I have plenty of 64 GB SD cards.

That's awesome David that today is your last day. How exciting! I still have about 15 years before retirement. Depressing. Haha

I need to do something about my storage situation. I am currently out of disk space. The a7RII files are huge especially when using photoshop with my workflow. The resulting psd files can be multi gigs each.

I have considered a NAS solution but they are so expensive. I could add more hard drives but that's just a band aid. Thoughts? Bite the bullet on a Synology type solution?

I went the synology route. Got a 2 drive version and put 2x 3 gig drives in setup in raid 1. It was relatively cheap and works great. I can even access my files while at work from my works laptop. I then have 2x 1 gig externals plugged into the nas and the nas auto backups daily to them. Synology backup is very like the mac timemachine I.e you can go back through previous backups.

David, congrats. I can retire in 31 years officially. I'm counting down the days......

Thanks!! :)

I like the Drobo 5D for a couple reasons:

1. Since it is a DAS (Desktop Attached Storage) that connects directly via USB 3 or Thunderbolt, you get pretty much the same speed and responsiveness of an internal drive. If you need to work wirelessly or have to access the files from multiple PCs NAS is a better solution, but for sheer speed you can't beat DAS.

2. It is dead-easy. Pop in 5 hard drives (I prefer Western Digital) and you're all set. All 5 drives will report as one single volume.

Drobo used to have somewhat of a tarnished reputation for reliability by some (Scott Kelby), but they have addressed it and others, like Trey Ratcliff (external link) still love their Drobos. I have never had any failures in my last five years of use.

I don't have the 5D model - I have the previous generation model (5S) - but I would like to upgrade and when I do I may just go with five 6TB Western Digital Red drives for 30TB of storage in the 5D. My current Drobo just has four 2TB drives, so that would be a great upgrade.

David, welcome to the world of the retired. It's good that you can now pursue your vision for photography as you see it and not someone else's. It took me about a year to learn how to be retired after 50 years of working.

I retired after a 48 year full time career, but I still do a consulting gig now and then.

It helps pay for the photography toys. :-D

lol, title fairy irony. I do hope to retire in 10-15, however when my kids go to college, it's essentially the same right? I dont particularly have a grueling work pace or schedule, and can and have worked while traveling.

Thanks so much Gene!! I hope this premature-retirement plan works out. Next 6-7 years will be tight. But, if it all works out it will mean that I only had to work full-time for 27 years. Mainly I hope I can generate just enough sales from my photography to pay my travel expenses as I travel around Georgia capturing the imagery there.

I need to come up with a cool business name. I need ideas. "David Arbogast Photography" is lame and horrible. Need something that speaks to Georgia or the Southeast region.

That's simple. Y'All Fer Sure Photography

Congrats on the retirement David. Just understand that you'll be so busy, you'll wonder how you ever managed to fit in a full time job.
