The same company (Came TV) makes larger units that can support the a7 series...costs a lot more though. $1K or so. These small camera gimbals are pretty much for tiny GoPros and the like. Heck, I wish the thing would even support a RX100 IV, but even that is probably way too much for these GoPro gimbals.

Nevermind then.

Hey David. You've been shooting the Sony for a while now with a variety of lenses. Any odd double starbursts?

Thinking out loud here......but I think the odds of Sony releasing a compact, and more affordable FF mirror less next year is pretty high.

Based on the historical pace of updates, the a7II is due for an update sometime next year. I say by Spring of next year to launch a new body alongside the 8 new FE lenses we're supposed to be getting. My gut is saying that the a7II goes the direction of the a7rII and a7sII, and moves up-market in terms of price and features. The a7sII pushed itself further into the video niche, so there's room for the a7sIII to be the low light still shooter with a BSI sensor (more than 24mp, but less than 42mp)? or perhaps put a new AF system into it, bump the FPS, and make it a FF sports shooter? Or maybe a combination of both. Either way, I don't see the a7III moving down-market.

If the a7III does move up-market, there will be a gaping hole in the compact, budget friendly FF realm that the a7 once occupied....which is why I'm thinking we'll see an a6 next year. The pop-up EVF in the rx1rII is rather telling. If you're a manufacturer like sony, who makes most of the components within the camera in-house, you'd want to leverage economies of scale to put components in as many different product lines as possible. My bet is that we see an a6 with the existing 24mp sensor, 179 point AF system, and pop-up EVF No IBIS to keep cost and size down. Price right at $2k +/- a couple thousand bucks. I'm also betting we see more compact, and affordable FE primes. 50 or 40 f2 pancake?

Interesting idea about a up market of he a7iii and an introduction of something else. What I see happening myself is the much rumored, entry level camera, the a5 of sorts. Very basic FF system, again recycling the old a7 sensor. Basic AF like the 25 point CDAF, no PDAF, no IBIS, basic 1080p video. No EVF, styled kind of like the old NEX5 cameras. Maybe give it the same 180 degree flip screen, possibly even touch. Priced at an entry level price, possibly breaking the magic number at $999. Basically make it like the 2013 a7, just in a different form factor to save money. That way consumers can go cheap and buy the a5 or have to step up to a a7 series st say $1,500-1,800 price point for an entry a7 or a $2,500+ higher end.

I really haven't seen any double starbursts in my stuff, but I am sorry to say that - and maybe this betrays a trust issue with me - most of my nighttime stuff that actually has strong starbursts are shot with my Canon cameras.

There is so much comparitive work I should and need to be doing to really see how these cameras (a7R II and 5DS R) compare in different scenarios. Sorry about that, I will try to do some work on that soon.

Just took this shot with the Batis 25 to see how close I could get it to the subject. Also, used Capture One which now supports the uncompressed RAW file. It seemed pretty fast and the default settings looked great. This was ISO 4000.

I feel exactly the same. Probably won't get one, but I am seriously thinking about it for a few reasons:

1. 35mm is frequently that sweet spot for me between somewhat wide and somewhat normal. I bought the awesome FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA and absolutely loved it except for three things: a tlited element (defect, so it had to be returned), radioactive green fringing in the bokeh, and it is heavy. But, as I gave it a good workout my thought was it could easily be my most used lens as the focal length suits my general shooting needs so well.

2. The RX1R II is lighter and more compact than a7R II with 35mm f/2 (loxia referenced here because it is an f/2 lens), lens is perfectly tuned to the sensor for absolute best image quality.

3. The above reasons mean that the RX1R IIwould likely see very heavy usage by me, and that more than anything is the measure to use for justification.

I shoot 35-50 most of the time as well, and would really dig the smaller footprint of he RX1. Being able to carry this around either bare with just a sling strap or a hand strap would be nice. Having killer IQ would be nice.

This sounds like my thoughts (although I'm not going to get the rx1rII as its too expensive for me) but I would really love one. I thought the Sony a7rii would be the answer to all my wanting to go small wishes but I've found that it's still not exactly pocketable. I've ordered a CV40 which I am going to trial to see if that gives me a more pocketable setup on the days I want to be minimal. I'm also close to buying a Fuji x100t to double up as my 35mm option and also be the single pocketable camera on days where I want that, will still be definitely keeping the a7rii though as I do love it. The rx1rii would fit that need perfectly, if only it was cheaper. Having a 28mm, an x100t and a cv40 is too much in the one focal zone so will have to decide what s best for me and adjust things to suit.

I love the a7rII, it certainly is lighter and easier to carry than my old D810. That one was heavy enough that I would most often walk around with just the 50 f/1.4 on it. But lately even the a7rII is seeing the 55 1.8 attached more and mor because to save size. I don't need camera to be pocketable per se, in fact when I had the x100t it wasn't pocketable, the only camera that I've had that was trul pocketable was the Ricoh GR. That one was a great camera.

The x100t would seem to tick all the boxes for me, but it never really meshed with me. Could be the lack of a tilt screen, which is becoming more and more important for me. Could be the improved but slower AF, could also be the fully manual dials which I'm not a huge fan of.

I'm a 35mm guy, so I can't stop thinking about the RX1RII. That camera could cover probably 85% of what I shoot. Too much money for me right now though. Maybe next year.

I sort of wish that I had known about the RX1RII when the a7rII hit the market, and knew that the a7II would get the update to use PDAF with adapted lenses. My decisions about gear might have headed in a different direction. My main concern if I got the RX1RII, is that the a7rII wouldn't be utilized enough to justify the cost of the body.

I wish I knew about the update to the RX1RII. It had been so long since we heard anything about it, the last we heard was a curved sensor, but nothing. Having the internal guts of an a7rII combined with the benefits of the RX1 is a grea thing. Eye AF, PDAF, etc.

More and more lately I'm using the tilt screen to compose shots because of my 2.5 yr old and now 4 month old. Anyone who does with the a7rII will know where I'm coming from when the sensitive eye sensor annoys me like crazy. I can't tell you how many times I have th screen titled to get eye level with my daughter, reach to hit the shutter, then flash, the screen goes off.

I've placed my preorder for the RX1RII and will see where I go from here. I know a lot of people talk about how liberating shooting with one lens/one focal length frees their mind to see things from a new perspective. Also the 42mp sensor will give me more leeway when it comes to cropping. I cropped with the original RX1 but having more pixels to crop and retain mor detail will be nice.

Thanks for the info. I did have a Jupiter 9 a while ago in M42 mount but think that may have been before I got the A7.

One of the appeals of the Leica 90 and CV40 is the small size and small adapters. I guess I need to look for a M39 LTM Jupiter then is that correct?

It's kinda confusing because the soviets had two 39mm thread mounts, they're both the same but one is for rangefinders like their Zorkis and the other is for their M39 SLRs. It's the same mount but they have different flange-focal distances. You want one in L39 or LTM off a Zorki or FED, not the M39 off a Zenit SLR.

The L39 version is higher quality than the M39/M42 SLR version because those had to have an extra optic added to compensate for the mirror.

I love rangefinder lenses, I'm getting a Jupiter 8 in the midde of this week. My fiend uses one in his Leica IIIf and he convinced me to get one. My Industar 26 was tiny on my A7, a bit too slim for my liking so that's another reason im going for a jupiter. It's a bit thicker and hopefully will be a better fit.

After that I'm going to look for a Jupiter 12(35mm) and the 9.

Ger right on it, man! Slacker! :)

You know what's great about the A7RII? The fact that I can spend an evening shooting in LA with Charlie, carrying a tripod around and **** about how much I hate that tripod and the clutter...And then getting home and discovering that every single keeper was shot handheld with AUTO ISO and IBIS.

Charlie - I hope he doesn't mind.

FE 90 (demoing Eye AF) wide open. ISO 6400. No NR (in fact, minimal processing. Some contrast only). That's right. ISO 6400! Handheld!

btw, I have some photos from the 35, and optically it's really clean, however I was only shooting F8. Unlike the 40, the 35 is sharp to the edges and it's a really neat looking lens.

You guys are really making me want that FE 55mm...

I'm waiting to see if they come out with a pancake of some sort first though, or maybe even a Sony 50/1.4... though I'm sure it wouldn't be as good optically, it'd probably be cheaper and given how much I love the FE 28mm, I'd probably love it too.

On a loosly related topic, I just got an X-E2 and 27mm pancake (I know, not the a6000 as logic would dictate  ) to use as my small and "cheap" camera for those times that I need it (daily goes to work camera mostly) and I was surprised at how similar the size is to the a7S. If sony would just come out with a good pancake lens it'd be barely any larger (though noticeably heavier). There are definitely some things about the Fuji that I wish Sony would learn from and emulate, but for the most part the a7S is without a doubt the better camera, but I think the X-E2 will fit the niche I bought it for perfectly :)
