Speaking of updates, I've still not done the uncompressed raw update on the body yet. Probably not going to use it most of the time but want to have it installed for certain landscapes. Need to make a point of doing it, the sony firmware process scares me a little though

do it on a laptop so power loss is not an issue. You have the option of turning the feature off, so no harm with the update.

A little something I picked up a week or so ago...I can sum it up in one word...smoooth! :-)

Chivas Regal, Gold Signature, aged 18 yearss

(Nadim, for this shot, I used a bounce umbrella + ambient in manual mode.)

Very nice.

What I like about your "product shots", Gene, time after time, is the smooth lighting you have at your place.
The choice of backgrounds (the wood paneling for example, behind most of these shots) makes a huge difference compared to the starkness of my walls, for example.

Sony A7RII and a bunch of lenses.

Its more the fear of bricking the camera actually doing the update. I much prefer the canon way of putting the file on a memory card and inserting.

Bit off topic but can anyone advise me on what I need to take some reflected type product shots (something like this - http://www.noupe.com …e-product-photography.jpg (external link) and this - https://www.clavister.com …amily-front-2700x1900.png (external link)). Is it just glass thats used or can acrylic/perspex be used? Whats the cheapest way to achieve this?

Anything reflective will work. Most people use plexiglass.....I use the top of a subwoofer with a piano black finish hah

Most important thing is to control the direction and the spill of your light sources

Thanks Vinz. I assume then if you wanted it black you would put it over a black material and if white a white material etc?

Excellent, thanks for the info Vinz/Carlo. I will pick up a bit of plexi and have a play around. I want to try and get better at lighting these type of shots. Good winter project for me

Edit - Ive done it this way before using my old kitchen table which was glass but it gives a sort of double reflection at times

^I think the double reflection looks way cool.

And don't worry about the update. I've found a laptop and IE work best. Chrome has failed me many times in the update and also with Playmemories apps.

I've updated Nex-5,6,7,A6000,A7R,A7S, A7Rii and never bricked one. If I can do you'll have no problem.

Cool shot.

High-key white infinity and low-key black infinity have their own challenges, but for the low-key shots, the trickiest part for me is keeping unwanted light and reflections out of the frame, and getting the reflections in the right places. The cognac bottle shot you posted looks like they used a couple of strip boxes.

For the shot of the a7II I posted, I used the rogue speedlight grids on two speedlights....one shooting downwards in front of the camera as a key light, and a rim light to separate the camera from the background.

Vin, your portraits are top notch! Keep up the great job.

Another view of the kitchen. The island has the cooktop, oven, and microwave providing that clean look we were after.
