I need a flash braniac's assistant please-

Some awesome news (for me, maybe others), or could be old old news.
For those who like to travel small and light the Nissin i40 is king.
But I learned in Costa Rica from Chris Jimenez the extreme value of
off-camera flash. Seeing the difference from on camera to a flash 10 feet
away blew me away.
The news is the little dinky Sony HVL-20 will remotely fire the i40 off camera.
The size of both of these flashes is still 1/2 the size of a 'normal' flash.

Now my puzzle is how much exposure is coming out of the HVL-20 on the camera?
So I covered the HVL-20 up with my hand-the i40 still fired with Poof holding it
8 feet away. Then I turned the Rii + HVL-20 in the oposite direction my body
blocking line of site with the i40 and the i40 still fired.
Ok so it's wireless! Even better....

Now these observations are without reading any manual, only putting the
Nissin in Sf mode and setting Fill Flash in the Rii's menus.

I covered up the HVL-20 so all exp would come from the remote i40 for the
results I'd be after in the real world BUT does anybody know how to do
this without covering up the HVL-20 ??

Next test is to try the Better Beamer with the i40.

Heck, I didn't even know the i40 could be fired wirelessly unless it's done optically. I'll have to check that out.

I'll be joining this thread. My sister stopped in for a few days on her way to California. We did the gift exchange just before she left, and she insisted I open mine so she would know if it was a good choice.

I'm thinking it was a good choice. When I visited her last year, I was mainly using my a6000, and told her it was an awesome little camera. She stepped it up a few notches for me. I love my sister.

Let the learning begin!

Wife dressed her as Alice for her 10 month portrait. Alice in Wonderland and the Through the Looking Glass have always been sort of dark and twisted to me....so my take on the post processing strays from her vision

my suggestion to portrait pro is you should clean up first the temporary blemishes like pimples with a healing or clone tool so you don't have to crank up the smoothing in PP. that way you won't go overdone. what you did above is perfect though.

nice shot BTW,

I've seem the ads for Portrait Pro on FM for a long time and always thought it must be cheesy "pro" software like you'd see on the shelf at a Best Buy store. But I got a copy (studio version) too and color me impressed - very impressed - as well. Really nice work Lucas. :)

are you using an A72 or an older A7R...

I have a bracket very similar to that, for the first series from ishoot...I don't need it after getting the RRS bracket...

O I have both. But the L bracket on my A7ii only cover 2/3 of the bottom, stop right before the battery door. It is very functional but feel oddly sometimes when hand held.

Got the RRS for my A7R, but didn't feel like spending that kind of money again on my a7ii. Found a Sunway L Bracket when the a7ii first comes out.

It works fine, but I rather have one that cover the entire bottom.

Advaitin please confirm.
I too would not have guessed wireless with the combo of HVL20 and i40.
I will check it again tomorrow when I get out of the hospital.
But again I ask, even if it is not radio and is optical, how can I eliminate
exposure contribution from the on-camera, e.g. the HVL20, from the overall
exposure?
I would think the HVL20 so underpowered that its contribution at distance
will be minimal.
Yeah I'm always scheming owls :)
