Advaitin please confirm.
I too would not have guessed wireless with the combo of HVL20 and i40.
I will check it again tomorrow when I get out of the hospital.
But again I ask, even if it is not radio and is optical, how can I eliminate
exposure contribution from the on-camera, e.g. the HVL20, from the overall
exposure?
I would think the HVL20 so underpowered that its contribution at distance
will be minimal.
Yeah I'm always scheming owls :)

I don't use flash much. Sometimes with a better beamer for birds. When I was working I used multiple dumb flashes and electric eye triggers and a minolta flash meter for combined readings. All that stuff is gone. If I have to have a flash these days I use a shoe mount and bounce it or use a softbox type diffuser. If I had to, I suppose I could set an off camera rig, but I'd want the instruction manuals close by. I used the beamer for the owls here, no flash for the owl in Bulgaria. If your flash on camera is a master and your second flash is the main but slaved, you just need to experiment to see how much you can diffuse or turn the head to still set off the second flash. Just off the top of my head.

Great info. Again, loved the Bulgarian owl; the 24-240 did good :)
And just so you know, Poof is my off-camera flash stand haha!

I just wanted to see if you could reproduce my results since you have
those two flashes.

A quick scroll down the latest page at my Flickr account shows my biggest themes lately...booze, steaks, cameras and macro shots with a portrait or two thrown in occasionally for good measure. Obviously I need to get out more too!

You should have plenty of photographic opportunities in Arizona. Btw, did you mention whereabouts you were headed? Route 40 or Route 10?

Route 10. Headed to the Phoenix area. Then Sedona later on. Looking forward to it.

I try and refrain from posting this same pier but I got nothing else to take pics of

from tonight...

I was this close to heading down to HB for tonight's sunset. The clouds looked promising. Ended up staying home. But that came out great, Baan!
If you're so close to that pier, why don't you make your way further south on occasion? Lots of good beaches and piers to shoot around OC...Change it up a bit :)

Me, I've been having fun reprocessing older shoots and printing and framing the best of the best for my walls.

Here's one from last year. Reprocessed tonight. Which treatment do you guys like best?

I hope to get some cool shots.

I have gone south in the past. It's been awhile since I've done so... It's just that hb pier, balboa, long beach are the easier ones for me to get to. I don't plan to go out, they are randoms and the quickest for me to get to would be hb pier and balboa. I thought about going Newport the other week but laziness kicked my butt hehe :P

I prefer the 2nd wheel :D

here's another shot at a later time.

My metabones came through yesterday, not had a chance to update the firmware but the good news is my sigma 85 works perfectly. I knew that theoretically I shouldn't get front and back focus issues on mirrorless but i was still skeptical. Thankfully its been nailing everyone shot. Tonight's task is to update the firmware on the adaptor and on the camera (I still don't have uncompressed raw!)

I have the little HVL-F20M, but the other Sony interface flash is a Metz 52 AF-1. They do not speak to each other. I think you have to have flashes of a compatible system to do that, on the same channel and using the same protocols. I'll experiment

I know, enough already with my new "L" bracket but I had to add one more image showing it from the back of the camera. :-)

(Have I mentioned lately how much I like the Sigma 35 f1.4? ) :-)

I never used "L brackets" so just have to ask, what do you use it for?

Portrait orientation tripod work (or more specifically the ability to be able to switch from landscape to portrait orientations)

If you regularly use a monopod or tripod, it is far easier to mount and dismount cameras with Quick Release (QR) plates and clamps. My secondary discovery is that, in the event of a drop or fall, the L-plates actually protect the cameras from damages--so far.

Of course this assumes you use an arca-swiss type quick release ballhead to begin with. The "L" plate is like the flat plate that mounts to the bottom of the camera for quick attachment and release from the ballhead. The advantage of an "L" plate as mentioned is that it makes it easy to place the camera on the ballhead in either landscape or portrait orientation quickly.

Here's a shot of my ballhead with the camera mounted in portrait mode using the new "L" bracket...
